    Exclamation Organ-driven good music, please

    Hi all,

I am looking for good music (any genre, especially rock and fusion) featuring tons of ORGAN.

Some examples of organ-driven music I've been listening to a lot lately:

    - Cressida
    - Beggars Opera
    - Quatermass
    - Niacin
    - Bo Hansson

    Thanks,
    Demetrio.

If you're OK with Classical, well then Bach is a good place to start:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_FXoyr_FyFw

That's played on one of the few organs in the world that can play down to 8Hz. If you prefer more modern stuff, Widor really pushed the envelope:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QWYDo36huLU

    Symphonies:

    Saint Saens: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T4U0y8zZm28
    (it's the music from Babe)

    Dupre: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l1sU9Kv7bds

    Widor: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UwCqrrN2zYg

    And for something more modern,

    Vangelis: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_Tg0PaWaNM

Although that's not what purists would call "an organ."

Greg Rollie is one of my favorite Rock Organ player. Check out the first few Santana albums, the first few Journey albums (before Steve Perry) and if you can find it Abraxas Pool.

The latest Steve Winwood is very good. A basic recording with him, the organ and basic accompaniment.

    Eric "the Scorch" Scortia (Jazz)
Jimmy Smith, definitely Jimmy Smith (Jazz)

I also second the Booker T

You might find the first Yngwie Malmsteen album Rising Force interesting.

    Got early Deep Purple?

I've got a Classical on the Reference label that's incredible. I'll find it a later day and post it. I think it's called Organ, Brass & Pipe.

If you're interested in electronic rock organ (Hammond), as opposed to acoustic organ, check out the Nice with Keith Emerson on the organ before he discovered synthesizers. Some of their pieces are classical influenced, others are 60's psychedelic.

A couple of more late 60's organ driven rock albums to consider:
The Crazy World of Arthur Brown, with Vincent Crane on organ. The track "Fire" is a classic.
Atomic Rooster (first album especially), Arthur Brown spin-off with Vincent Crane again (also Carl Palmer on drums!)

For classical organ with a pop twist, check out Virgil Fox's recordings.

Kewl, another Triumvirat fan I see. Haven't heard this one but I do have "Old Loves Die Hard" on vinyl. Top notch studio production and mastering.

I like that one to, Peabody. But in the interest of clarity, the recently released live set with Eric Clapton would be his "latest." You're speaking of Nine Lives, of course.

Gadzooks...that sounds like a great idea for a muggy summer afternoon. Thanks!

Mr. Midfi, you are correct, thanks for the clarification. I haven't heard that Clapton/Winwood duo concert, any good?

I like Triumvarat. I bought Spartacus hearing it was the album to get but I don't like it as well as the Double Dimple album.

Yeah man, The Doors. It's like so obvious we almost missed it.

Are the Zombies good? Anything like their hit Time of the Season?

Man does that bring back the memories from my high school days. There was a faction that couldn't get enough of Kiss (pass the barf bag please) while we had a small contingent that was getting into some good stuff like Argent, early Deep Purple...ahhh, good times for sure.
I call my bathroom Jim instead of John so I can tell people that I go to the Jim first thing every morning.

    Here it is:
    Powerful Music
    Organ, Winds, Brass & Percussion
    RR-58CD

This is a digital master Reference recording. One of the best sounding recordings I've heard on CD. I used to use this disc on my Krell/Dynaudio system to revive heart attack victims Serious dynamics and transient response on the right system.

    Frederick Fennell
    Dallas Wind Symphony
    Paul Riedo, organ

Good question. I impulse-purchased the DVD while grocery shopping this weekend, and played it once. It's fairly bloozy (no surprise there), and kinda predictable. And there are too many little cut-aways between songs, with EC or SW commenting about the performance... I hate that sort of thing, especially when there's an entire second disc of docu-stuff.

But damn. These guys play well together. They always did, of course. But after 40-something years in the biz, they both really know what they're doing. And it was a smart decision to put them on-stage with just a stripped-down band...drums, bass & keys.

Jazz - Joey DeFranceso on the Hammond B-3
Classical - E. Power Biggs on the pipes ( Bach's Toccata in D Minor - the ultimate test for deepest bass pedal tones in any system )
