It's Friday and NP Time

Since it's Friday and all, anybody wanna spill their guts as to what's playing and why?

I'm at work, so the answer is nuttin, but driving around Lost Wages at lunchtime, I was playing Richard Buckner's Impasse, which I picked up last wk-end. Heard a lot about him, but this is the 1st album I've heard. Very fine stuff, musically and lyrically reminds me some of Jay Farrar, perhaps a little more accessible. A definite keeper.

I'm listening to Jesus & Mary Chain: Psychocandy, 'cause I saw Lost in Translation a few nights ago and when they played Just Like Honey, I realized that it had been way too long since I had given that one a listen. Psychocandy and Darklands are both great and a couple of a very few things I have on both vinyl and CD. (they're both much better on vinyl, seems like that fuzzy layered sounding stuff always is)

I'm listening to some Meat Puppets.. "Climb" from Meat Puppets II.

The great thing about the Meat Puppets is that anyone can sing along and you don't have to worry about being out of tune with the singer, because, they're not in tune that often either.

Been listening to The Wedding Present this Saturday morning. Seamonsters. I had used the song Suck on my latest comp (which I also listened to and posted the artwork for last night down at http://forums.audioreview.com/showth...7605#post17605) because that's probably my favorite on the CD, but after hearing the comp a bunch of times I really needed to listen to the whole CD (just a note to audio afficionados: I did have to compress the song quite a bit to get the volume up high enough to kinda-sorta match most of the others so the original will be somewhat better sounding than the version on the comp, although its not exactly of audiophile quality to begin with). Another of my many finds as a direct result of talking to people here. Nothing beats getting a recommendation from someone who has lived with an album for a few years and still loves it. This is definitely one of Steve Albini's best jobs (if not the best) as producer or engineer or whatever he calls himself. It's got this loud and powerful sound throughout, but full of subtelty as well. Building emotions that finally find release. That drum sound that drives suck is just so immense and powerful and sensual. Yeah, I guess I'm kinda in love with this album. Close to a 10 on Davey's completely unbiased and highly rational rating scale. One of those CDs that you can probably recommend to just about anybody who likes rock music, I think? Well, maybe not. Any other opinions on that? I haven't heard the recent remaster. Anyway, great album - terrible CD player. It's skipping some right now because it's a piece of Sony shit

Now see, I don't get that reference at all. Is it over my head or just something silly? I can't even think of how Kingpin sounds right now. I've only got Being There on vinyl and don't have it with me here so can't even listen to it to find out what you're talking about and whether I'm being insulted or not

I need to order a copy of Mr. MidFi's resequenced version of Being There. It is kind of a cumbersome listen on two slabs of vinyl, even when available. Sounds pretty nice, though.

way back I think Mr. MidFi and I agreed that "Kingpin" was one of our favorite Wilco songs, at least a favorite off BEING THERE. I know someone around here isn't a fan of that song, I thought it was you.. maybe it wasn't ?? maybe it was Chris?

The lyrics are pretty much total nonsense but I love the hillbillyness of the song, it reminds me very much of the song "John Brown" by Masters of Reality.. I just the way the organ just kind of honks away in the background too, sticking its head out every so often like some turtle..

Dimetap, Spinal Tap, City Maps.. and Hand Claps.. kind of like some of the early Meat Puppets songs.. total nonsense :-)
