    Hey, speaking of Portishead...

So, I broke into the palace
With a sponge and a rusty spanner
She said : "Eh, I know you, and you cannot sing"
I said : "That's nothing - you should hear me play piano"

I've had it pre-ordered for a few weeks and not gonna cheat. Gonna savor those first few listens. Not gonna rush it, in its own time. Wait for Beth to crawl in my bed. Been waiting for a long time ...

Looks like I need to get my order to DD as well, and I think I should have it by mid-August tops.

Have only listened once with mixed emotions. Different from their past records. All those real instruments. Kind of rumbles along. Sets an interesting mood. I'm gonna hafta hear this a few more times before I make a call on where it sits. At least they're not resting on their laurels.

    bought it yesterday.

I do say it's different from their previous albums, but certainly not bad at all...
some of the tracks immediately catch you with their first notes, sucking you in completely after them...

I've been impressed with how much emotions it 'releases'...

    Keep them spinning,

I feel the same. Dummy is amazing, and Portishead is pretty good, although I never really got into it. Part of the reason perhaps is that I haven't owned it that long, whereas I've been listening to Dummy for years. As for Third, I had a listen yesterday. I have to say it's a bit strange, but then they all are. It didn't feel like Portishead, at time it sounds much more like the album she did with Rustin Man (i.e Folk). Anyway, time will tell

One listen in...not digging it...not lovefest digging it anyway. I liked Dummy instantly and haven't changed my mind. Three is 'interesting'. I think there's a lot in there, lots of texture. Certainly has grow-on-you-potential. The last track just ended and I'm hitting repeat for another listen. Already I like track 1 better than I did 49:08 minutes ago.

In a nutshell. Seems more organic. (I liked the electronic feel of Dummy). More angst-y, pity-me-y than the distant dummy. My first impression was "this was the sound of broken rage (or an attempt to escape ennui) from deep inside a communist/socialist nation". Then my second thought was "whoa, where did that first thought come from?"

That is a heavy thought for one of you scientific-types...you need to stop going to those modern art exhibits.

Well I've had it for a couple of months - listened a few times and have little compulsion to return to it. Wouldn't yet call it a disappointment, but it is clearly not pressing the right buttons early on.

I must concur with the others here too...

first time I played it, it was different, but I liked it, but since then, I actually didn't play it that much anymore...
I've listened to 'live at NYC' more, in the meanwhile...

Where's Slosh when you need him?

Geez guys, it really is okay to say that something sucks...must be apprehension due to the current political climate. Seriously, it sucks. Mebbe not step-off-the-curb-and-get-hit-by-a-mack-truck suckage...more like wake-up-and-some-drunken-partygoer-has-peed-in-the-heater suckage. Blows nonetheless.

I'd rather read about Noddy's other purchases; I'm pretty sure we can do that without offending the OP.

It sounds like you shop like I do, in flurries.

Always one in the crowd, guess this time it will be me. To me it was a very striking record from the start, something hard to ignore. Admittedly, I didn't quite feel the love at first, but it drew me back again and again. Somewhat like Beth's solo record, but much more unique and worldly. That atmosphere is rare in modern music. Still not completely sure how I feel about it, but I do get the feel it is something special and will stay with me for a long while. Can't think of anything it sounds like, can't decide if it's anchored in the past or future. Seems mastered OK for a new CD, though it still doesn't sound all that good.

But brilliant record. Hard to think of another band that got this adventurous so far into their career. They must love music to put this kind of effort over so long a time span into a new release, when it woulda been so much easier to recycle 1995. Definitely maybe in contention for best thing I've heard this year. This and Shearwater. Better and better with each time I hear them. I smile each time they take an unexpected turn. And I smile a lot listening to Third. Love it...kinda...I think...I'd like to laugh at what you said...but I just can't find the smile...cause I don't know what I've done to deserve you...and I don't know what I'll do without you..

And how can a record with the motorrrific "The Rip" on it suck? Have you no Kraftwerkian soul? Have you seen any of the footage from Coachella? Made the Silver Apples proud...

Monkeydude, you know I'm down with the ghost in the machine, I am the ghost in the machine, I am the game bay-bay...

...but I think your confusing your bedtime romp fantasies about Beth with good music.

I got your back on the Shearwater though, so we'll agree to disagree and call it 50%.

"Kraftwerkian soul"? hmmph, did you even believe that as you were typing it? If I want the days of yesteryear I got Blackstrobe, Ghostland Observatory, the Presets...etc.

Nah, there's always good music playing, Stickman. I remember one time on another green world, with spirits drifting, or maybe it was before and after science. Had to get up a flip the record at one point whatever it was. Coulda even been I can hear the heart beating as one, times get a little hazy with Beth...

Loving a touch of Kraftwerk (or even that mix of King Crimson and Joy Division on "We Carry On"), isn't the same as living in the past. It's just knowing where we've been and where we came from.

T'ain't want I talkembout my friend primate friend. All those listed were releases within the last year, meaning that if I wanted to embrace some of the influences of yesteryear there's options that are more to my tastes. Ain't nobody sayin' nothin bad 'bout Kraut Rock 'round me...I thought you knew.

Mebbe, mebbe, mebbe, just mebbe I need to send a little somethin' somethin' through the skies and across the lands...only fair after, truth be told, you've introduced me to several things that are now on the regular diet.

I'm still not completely convinced 'bout the Beth thang, and I'm not sure your 'breathy" last posts helped your cause...

Jah Jah welcome. "Exclusionist prick" eh, damn that is tight. I'm sure your populist nemesis had the foritude to include his/her/its handle. Nice.

Hhhmnm...seeks out new and experimental forms of art, listens, thoughtfully shares reactions with buddies...I'd call that audiophile or music fan or even hobbyist...exclusionist prick...well po-ta-toe/po-taa-to.

Maybe you should drown your sorrows in one or more of these here Old Rasputin Stouts. I find these days that they go quite well with the Shearwater...
