    Exclamation Favorite Top Three Rock Drummer.

    Classic Rock is what I listen to most (70&80s), so these drummers are from that era.

    No in any particular order:

    Bun E. Carlos of Cheap Trick: This guy is like a drum machine without missing a beat. The song Dream Police is good example of his drum work.


    Myron Grombacher of Pat Benatar: He is kind of short, but when drumming he is bigger than life. The song Don’t Use Sex as a Weapon is good example of his work.


    Mel Gaynor of Simple Minds: Big sound and hard beat, and rhythm to back it up The song Speed Your Love to Me will get your speakers cooking with drum beats.

    I was just watching that Porcupine Tree live DVD last night, and damn...that guy really can freakin' play. He's definitely my favorite right now.

    I read recently he's on board with King Crimson now. Anyone else see that?

    Keith Moon... The Who. He was just crazy on the drums (and in real life too).
    Neil Peart... Rush. I agree. Like a precision engineered timepiece
    Ginger Baker... Cream. I know, he was 60's but a legend in his own time nonetheless

    2. Portnoy - used to be my #1 until the last Rush tour when Peart slammed him into second spot.
    3. Hard to keep it down to three. Could be Palmer, Harrison or Terry Bozzio.

    Thanks everybody.

    I also must agree that Neil Peart of Rush is one of the best. Too bad not much of a Rush fan.

    Phil Collins mentioned by GMichael is also one of my of favorite. His drumming style is much like Ringo Starr and Charlie Watts of Rolling Stone.

    I'm not good at all this who's the best musician argument, but I wanna give a shout out to one of my favorite drummers.


    Moe Tucker

    Hard to judge her technical chops because she played by a totally different rule book. Turned the bass drum over to play it standing up with those malletts...not big on the cymbols...almost tribal. She may not be able to play what some of these other folks can play, but she sure has a sound all her own, a true original.

    You know who wasn't really the "best" technical drummer in the world, but always added something very tasty to a song? Bill Berry of REM, that's who.

    The proof is in the pudding...the band simply has not been the same since he left. And I say that as one of their biggest fans (probably THE biggest) on this board.

    I think that Smoke is looking for our favorite drummers instead of "the best" drummers. That kind of opens it up to anyone no matter how good or bad they are/were. So let it rip.

    I played the hell out of this album back when it came out. I loved how up-front the drums were - it sounded great in my car system (which was likened unto a rolling stage moniter by a musician friend of mine).

    We had a lot of fun with that album title
