Just off the top of my head, two immediately come to mind.

Manfred Mann's version of Springsteen's Blinded by the Light.

Colin James' version of Van Morrison's Into the Mystic. Here's the studio version. There are a couple of good live versions on YT also if you care.

Oh, man, covers are my favorite. I could probably make a 10-disc set of stuff from my collection.

Here're two from my top 10, I'll be back with more later.

The Editors doing REM's Orange Crush, and Jason Mraz doing Melt With You.

And for an entire disc, you can't beat Easy Star All Star's Dub Side of the Moon. Reggae Floyd. Excellent.

Thanks guys for suggestions. It is interesting to hear how each band put their own twist into familiar song. Sometimes it does sound better than the original

My all time favorite cover is Devo's cover of the Rolling Stones "(I can't get no) Satisfaction". This is followed very closely by Johnny Cash covering "Hurt" from NIN. If I was penning the series finale of Breaking Bad, this cover would be front and center and I'd sit back and wait for my Emmy.

Joey Ramone covering "What a Wonderful World" was aided by his untimely death but he made that tune his own.

Siouxsie and the Banshees covering both "Dear Prudence" and "Helter Skelter" is usually a treat for me. Actually, there a lot of Beatles covers that I enjoy a great deal more than the originals.

Gary Jules covering "Mad World" from T4F's was used to perfection in Donnie Darko.

The last one that springs to mind is Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's absolutely stunning rendition of "Over The Rainbow". He owns the song.
