Falling Through the Cracks

I mentioned in a post from another thread a record I just picked up from 2001. I notice that a lot of the talk around here centers on stuff that is either from the current year, or that may be considered old favorites kind of stuff. You don't see as much stuff posted about from say a year or two ago. I know I'm not the only one that misses things and picks them up after a year or two.

Just a couple things I've picked up this year that came out in the recent past would be...

Dusted: When We Were Young (2001)
Electronic ambient semi-concept LP with a variety of beats tossed in. One not to miss if you're into that sort of thing.

ISAN: Lucky Cat (2001)
More ambiet electronics. More drony, and slower paced than Dusted. Analog synths throughout. Excellent Sunday morning music, or comking down at the end of a long night.

There's more, but I just figured I'd toss out a couple right now. So, who else has been grabbing those things that slipped through the cracks when they first came out?

Most everything I buy is "retro".

But I buy a bunch of recently released titles, regardless of recording date.

One lesson I have learned over the years is that if you are out cd shopping and find a "rare" title you have been looking for, you better get it then.

I have several times found stuff I wanted bad but didn't get it for some reason, assuming the next time I visit it will still be there.

And of course when I go back it is gone... :(

Oh man, I live off things that fell through the cracks. That Marianne Faithful disc is the most notorious of those.

More recently it's been Beth Orton's Trailer Parkand I love the heck out of that disc. That came out in 1996 and I just got it within the past couple of months. Lovely album that I'm actually looking at right now.

Grabbed Ryan Adam's Heartbreaker this year too. S'OK I guess but this is why I readily questioned the 'genius' comments on J's Ryan Adams is a jerk thread.

The Zero 7 Simple Things disc is another I'm glad I went back for. I'd listened to the remix album this year and wasn't impressed at all but the original 2001 release is a whole lot better even though it's not my typical thing.

That's four and I'm sure there are at least 20 others, if not more where that came from. Next list will include Joe Strummer and Cat Power, since I didn't manage to get either this year. FWIW a TON of year end lists I've seen include the Strummer release. Probably a pretty big mistake on my part.

Yeah, occasionally I'll pick up something I missed, but for the last few years I've bought too much new music each year so usually don't go back and try to find ones I missed, instead concentrating on more new ones. But in the last year I have bought less new music and acquired more older albums. For instance, going through my wishlist of music I got over the last year or so some of these older ones stand out ....

Most were pretty good finds, many sent to me by my buddies here. The only real clunker was that Mitchell Froom disc that I picked up used for cheap cause I liked the cover and it has a lot of guest artists I like. Unfortunately it sucks badly, although I think Troy mentioned recently that he likes it. Figures ;)

Yeah, I think a lot of that disc is pretty interesting in a Tom Waits kinda way. Maybe it's a grower.

Say, I have to agree with you. I want the fresh music more than stuff from 2 or 3 years ago. The only exceptions I make are when one of you mentions something that you think was your "favorite of that year" and I've never heard it. I probably bought 3 or 4 this year in that category(does Blonde Redhead ring a bell?), but I really prefer the new releases. I finally got the latest Super Furry Animals and I can't believe I waited this long! I really liked Rings Around the World and should have jumped on Phantom Power much sooner (side note: that cd title is also the title of my favorite from the Tragically Hip). I also got The Wrens cd you've all been raving about and I like it very much.

Wow, that's fun to find out! I love that album and Sloshy picked it up not too long ago as well. It's always nice when there's a sleeper album like that which keeps growing on you and you can turn other people on to it. They have a new one coming out pretty soon, I think. At least I hope. No clue what it will be like, though.

You probably noticed that a good chunk of those on my list were from you :)

I don't really get that feel at all from it because to me it comes off like a bunch of over zealous studio wankery, almost the opposite of Tom Waits. Some of the artists just seem wasted and I found myself wondering what they thought upon hearing the final results. I don't know, maybe you're right that it just needs some more listens. I only got it back in July and was so turned off from the initial couple listens that I just resigned it to the "mistake" box, but I'll have to pull it out over the holidays and see if it's really as big a ham as I thought :)
