Experiment for a future tournament
In Newtrix's Wilco v. Talking Heads thread I postulated an idea for future Favorite Artist tournaments. Instead of having bands from completely different genres fight it out (Wilco v. Yes, for example), divide the competitors into genres (New Wave/Post Punk, Punk, Prog, Alternative, Indie, Metal, Hard Rock, Singer/Songwriter, Current Bands etc.).

Put 8 artists in each genre. Have them shootout elimination-style (prelims, semi, final). Get a winner in each genre, then stage another elimination tournament with the winners until a champion emerges. Whaddya think?

Here are the working genres I've come up with so far:

Current Bands
Radiohead
White Stripes
Wilco
My Morning Jacket
Broken Social Scene
Strokes
Beck
Shins

Jane's Addiction
REM
Replacements

Seattle
Nirvana
Mudhoney
Soundgarden
Mother Love Bone/Pearl Jam
Alice In Chains
Melvins
Green River
Screaming Trees

Punk
Ramones
Clash
Sex Pistols
Black Flag
Minor Threat/Fugazi
Dead Kennedys
Bad Brains
Stooges

New Wave/Post Punk
Talking Heads
XTC
Joy Division/New Order

Killing Joke

Brit Pop (Mini-Shootout, 2-Round Elimination)

What?

Gazing is under alt?

No synthpop? Are you an anti-synthite?

What about industrial for the rivet heads?

Can't forget Brit-pop.

Don't even get me started on techno.

If Siouxie ain't playing, neither am I. ditto for INXS, JT, ahh, but I see you got Numan so all is forgiven.

Just kidding of course, your game-go crazy.

I don't know the genre well enough. Gimme 8 good industrial bands and I'll include that too.

Siouxie was under consideration, but I've got only room for eight and I'm more familiar with Gary Numan than Siouxie, so...

Well, you know I'm in!
I think Nike might have the appropriate advice here: Just Do it!

Nice list, another genre to possibly consider is trip-hop/electronica: Portishead, Massive Attack, Tricky, Laika, Beth Orton, Madonna, Bjork, Beck, etc.

The contest is now ready.
Alright, I've got enough genres (16) to do this without having any loose ends. Thanks, Jim and Newtrix, for giving me some additional genres to use.

I'll start tonight with the following three shootouts:

Current Bands, Match 1: Shins v. My Morning Jacket
Indie Rock, Match 1: Sunny Day Real Estate v. Guided By Voices
Alternative, Match 1: Meat Puppets v. Jane's Addiction

More matchups to come soon.
