Devotchka: A Mad & Faithful Telling

I picked this up the other day. If you haven’t heard Devotchka, I’m not entirely sure how to explain it. Eclectic gypsy / klezmer / mariachi infused alt rock? They’re definitely odd and belt out songs with their hearts laid wide open. I had put one of my favorite songs from them on a previous comp. There’s something about this group that sticks to you. I mean that in a good way.

I looked up a Houston Chronicle review that said

“"Basso Profundo," which blends Eastern European folk with Morricone-style spaghetti Western noir for Cirque du Soleil acrobatics. "Along the Way" introduces mariachi horns and "Head Honcho" dabbles in Germanic polka, both accentuated by guitarist Nick Urata's quivering Orbison croon. Stunning Spanish bolero "Undone," instrumental Russian suite "Comrade Z," and elegantly stringed "The Clockwise Witness" perfectly balance transcendent moments like "Transliterator." Devotchka's captured the sound of a new world order.”

So there. I'm not the only one that struggles.

Anyway, I was really taken by the song Transliterator and thought I’d share with those interested. I also re-upped the one song from my previous comp. I have the lossless version now.

If you download, please comment. Don’t be a non-participating leech, please.

Files are FLAC (i.e. lossless, open source)
    Transliterator

They did the soundtrack for it and it was most excellent, as was the movie. The one song, 'How it Ends', is the title track from their 2004 release that I bought after reading a rave review somewhere. Good stuff from this Denver quartet. I sent a promotional copy to some RR crumb-bum who moved to Montreal not too long ago.

...soundtrack, but the point is that most of the songs heard in the movie were theirs, but not all. There were a couple by Sufjan Stevens, one by Rick James (Superfreak, which we all know was in that great scene at the 'L.M.S.' contest), and one by Tony Tisdale.

Hey! I resemble that remark. Could it be that I detect a little hockey team env? As in we have one and ... not so much. Looking pretty good for a possibe first round playoff match-up. Maybe we can re-live 1987 well except for the Flyers winning part - more the epic pre-game brawl part. Perhaps a small wager wiould be in order?

Oh, and a fine little album it be.

I never heard back from you regarding the cdr, you ungrateful s.o.b.! Did you ever even listen to it? Like it? Loathe it?

Hey, the Flyers have 4 wins in a row, including that awesome O.T. win over the hated Rangers last night. I really don't want they facing The Habs in the first round. I just don't think they have the horses to beat them in a series. They are now in 7th position, so if they keep playing well, they (and I) don't have to worry about it.

Hmmm...My records seem to indicate that I sent you a PM on 7/11/07, I guess it didn't reach you; http://forums.audioreview.com/privat...wpm&pmid=18063 Sorry for the mix-up I did appreciate it and liked the album quite a bit.

I think that a first round match-up is quite likely: Habs may be in 1st today but I expect the Pens will finish 1st and the Habs 2nd, which makes a Habs/Flyers match-up a distinct possibility.

Sounds like Camper Van Bird's Bowl Of Fire to me

BTW, does anyone know how to type a Ruskie "K" on the computer?

It apparently worked since you went back and found the PM! Ha! I can't remember what I had for lunch much less if you PM'd me about that cd. Heck, I sent one guy, who shall remain anonymous, at least until he reads this, the same dvdr twice because I didn't remember sending it the first time. I am officially an old geezer. Someone asked me which of my senses has decreased most, and I told him my sense of decency.

Ha! That's better than a whole bunch of cross cultural musical allusions. and shorter too.

I really liked LMS and remember thinking the music was well suited but I must have been laughing too hard to remember that it was Devotchka.

In case you're interested... Vegas odds on the Habs to win the cup were 25/1 last week. The Leafs were 500/1 and rightly so (although I hate to admit it). I can't remember what the Flyers were. Sens were 12/1. I almost put a bet on the Habs but couldn't quite bring myself to do it.

No line on Lacrosse unfortunately...not that I was really expecting one.

    Soon to be 0/1...sorry

12/1 for the Sens??? With that goaltending - a sucker's bet, if I ever heard one.

At 25/1 I just might put a 10 spot on the Habs.

I think if the Leafs lose tonight they're mathematically eliminated. Not such a bad thing in my mind. It'll hopefully force some major changes in the off-season. Sundin on the DL isn't helping.

I didn't get the Sens odds either. The Ducks had the best odds at something like 8/1. I suspect that last year's outcome plays a part in determining this year's odds.
