I was a big fan back in the day. Hard to believe he was 71.

Right Swish, I never thought he was 71. That means when their debut album came out in 1968, he was like 26 or 27 and that's not young in comparison to other groups. Still have their first two releases. Some great tunes.

I was fortunate enough to get front row seats for their 1973 tour through Dallas, Texas; this, of course, included the classic Deep Purple line-up :

    Ritchie Blackmore
    Jon Lord
    Ian Paice
    Roger Glover
    and the incomparable Ian Gillan

In the early 70s, they were one of many rock bands on the top of their game.
FIREBALL and MACHINE HEAD were monster albums...........good work.

    RIP Jon Lord.

I remember when that Machine Head album was released and was huge in my circle of like-minded friends. That was the first time I can recall where we pulled the 'hipster' mentality because Smoke on the Water wasn't released as a single until the following year (1973). Everyone was playing it and we were like 'that's so last year'. Ha!

I actually preferred Fireball to Machine Head, but they were both pretty big for me back then.

I saw them in March of 74 in Philly. Savoy Brown was the second bill and a group called Tucky Buzzard was the opening act. That could have been the same tour that MC saw them perform in Dallas.
