Funny how you got Johnny up there, Stan jumps out at me and in a lot of ways the two are inextricably tied, at least in my mind.

Stan Ridgway's vivid imagery conjures up a spin like no other. Some faves of mine:

    The Roadblock
    Lost Weekend
    Drive She Said

and from Snakebite: Blacktop Ballads and Fugitive Songs (appropriately titled for this thread) I like King For A Day. And for bonus points, let's all recall who created the artwork for this little gem. OK, so the album as a whole isn't the greatest work I've seen from Stan, but there are some unquestionably classic moments.

So many songs that mention cars ... aren't really about cars at all, just metaphors snuggled in a common guise that often is equated with sexuality. Baby, let me drive your car, yeah, right

That great Queen song, "I'm in love with my car" ...

Told my girl I'll have to forget her
Rather buy me a new carburetor
    So she made tracks sayin'
    This is the end now

... or the similar, but much later raw version by PJ Harvey on 4-track Demos, told from the opposite perspective, "M-Bike" ...

But all he's speaking and all he sees
Is just his motor bike, not me
No, I won't let it get to me
Can't stop thinking of his goddamn machine

Or the impending breakup in "Stolen Car", as written and sung so well by Beth Orton to open her second record, with Ben Harper supplying the menacing guitar tone, the soon gone metaphor ...

    One drink too many
And a joke gone too far
I see your face drive like a stolen car

Or longing for the comfort of home, away from the city, in Edith Frost's "Cars and Parties" ...

And oh it's always so cold 'round here
There's too many cars 'round here
And though I want to open up my heart
    There's too many parties

But for a real blast of car-loving rock and roll, I'll go with David Lindley and his hot band El Rayo-X doing their version (and owning it too) of "Mercury Blues". Classic ...

Well, hey now mama you look so fine
Ridin' round in your Mercury 49
Crazy 'bout a Mercury, Lord I'm crazy 'bout a Mercury
I'm gonna buy me a Mercury and cruise it up and down the road

    and my latest toy ...

Funny you should mention this- I just picked up a NASCAR comp because of a couple of the tracks, mainly Les Claypool and the "Highway Star" redo.

Gov't Mule feat. Special Guests - "Drivin' Rain"
Fenix*TX - "Get Out Of My Dreams (Get Into My Car)"
Fear Factory - "Cars (MPH Mix)"
Dry Cell - "Heaven & Hot Rods"
    Static-X - "Speedway"
Darwin's Waiting Room - "Fast Car"
    Slipknot - "(sic)(Molt-Injected Mix)"
Slayer - "Born To Be Wild"
Type O Negative - "Highway Star"

One of my favorites is about a motorcycle.

1952 Black Vincent Lightning by Richard Thompson. Not only does it feature some of the finest acoustic guitar playing I've ever heard, but it's a great story/song too.

Said Red Molly to James that's a fine motorbike, A girl could feel special on any such like
Said James to Red Molly, well my hat's off to you
    It's a Vincent Black Lightning, 1952
And I've seen you at the corners and cafes it seems
Red hair and black leather, my favourite colour scheme
And he pulled her on behind and down to Boxhill they did ride

Said James to Red Molly, here's a ring for your right hand
But I'll tell you in earnest I'm a dangerous man
I've fought with the law since I was seventeen
I robbed many a man to get my Vincent machine
    Now I'm 21 years, I might make 22

And I don't mind dying, but for the love of you
And If fate should break my stride
I'll give you my Vincent to ride

Come down, come down, Red Molly, called Sergeant McRae
For they've taken young James adie for armed robbery
Shotgun blast hit his chest, left nothing inside
Come down, Red Molly to his dying bedside
When she came to the hospital, there wasn't much left
He was running out of road, he was running out of breath
But he smiled to see her cry
Said I'll give you my Vincent to ride

Said young James. in my opinion, there's nothing in this world
Beats a 52 Vincent and a red headed girl
Now Nortons and Indians and Greeves won't do
    They don't have a soul like a Vincent 52
He reached for her hand and he gave her the keys
He said I don't have any further use for these
I see angels and ariels in leather and chrome
Swooping down from heaven to carry me home
He gave her one last kiss and died
And he gave her his Vincent to ride.

Great stuff and on a MUST-SEE DVD from Austin City Limits. Simply amazing.

Dictators- (I Live For) Cars And Girls

    Look at these lyrics!

(I LIVE FOR) CARS AND GIRLS

Well I'm the type of guy who's into getting high on a Friday afternoon
So now you know I'm a regular Joe and I'll tell you what I like to do

I like to make the scene
    In my machine
I like to make the scene
I leave 'em in another state
    Whenever I accelerate

I live for Cars and girls, cars and girls
I live for Car, cars and girls
I live for Cars and girls, cars and girls
I live for Car, cars and girls

There's nothing else in this crazy world
    Except for cars and girls

I got a lot of good sittin under my hood but it doesn't make me feel alright
The only time I'm feelin fine is when my baby's sittin tight

I like to get it down
I like to feel the sound
I like to get it down
I leave 'em in another state
    Whenever I accelerate

I live for Cars and girls, cars and girls
I live for Car, cars and girls
I live for Cars and girls, cars and girls
I live for Car, cars and girls

There's nothing else in this crazy world

Baby you and me will go
    A cruisin everywhere we know
We'll take a trip out to the west
    Cause the coast's the most
    'cause the surfin's best

The fastest car and a movie star are my only goals in life
It's the hippest scene, the American dream and for that I'll always fight

I like to get it down
I like to feel the sound
I like to get it down
I wanna drive the fastest car
I wanna drive the fastest car
I wanna drive the fastest car
    Cars, girls, surfin beer
    Nothin else matter here

I live for Cars and girls, cars and girls
I live for Car, cars and girls
I live for Cars and girls, cars and girls
I live for Car, cars and girls

There's nothing else in this goddamn world
    Except for cars and girls

    Led Zeppelin...

    "Trampled Underfoot"

Greased and slicked down fine, groovy leather trim
I like the way you hold the road, mama, it ain't no sin

    Talkin' 'bout love [X3]

Trouble-free transmission, helps your oil's flow
Mama, let me pump your gas, mama, let me do it all

    Talkin' 'bout love [X3]

Dig that heavy metal underneath your hood
Baby, I could work all night, believe I've got the perfect tools

    Talkin' 'bout love [X3]

A model built for comfort, really built with style
Specialist tradition, mama, let me feast my eyes

    Talkin' 'bout love [X3]

Factory air-conditioned, heat begins to rise
Guaranteed to run for hours, mama it's a perfect size

    Talkin' 'bout love [X3]

Groovin' on the freeway, gauge is on the red
Gun down on my gasoline, I believe I'm gonna crack a head.

    Talkin' 'bout love [X3]
    I can't stop talkin' about...

Come to me for service every hundred miles
Baby, let me check your points, fix your overdrive

    Talkin' 'bout love [X3]

Fully automatic, comes in any size
Makes me wonder what I did, before we synchronized

    Talkin' 'bout love [X3]

Feather-light suspension, coils just couldn't hold
I'm so glad I took a look inside your showroom doors

    Talkin' 'bout love [X3]

Oh, I can't stop talkin' about love.

Anybody add Maybelline (Chuck Berry), yet ? "Ford got hot and wouldn't do no mo. Rain came down. Heat went down. That's when I heard that highway sound"!

(later) I see a kindred spirit has listed Maybelline. Cheers, mate.

BTW, I can't stay logged in. JohnMichael- if you read this, can you think of a reason why?
