    James McMurtry recs, anyone?

I was channel surfing last night and came across James McMurtry on Austin City Limits and he was excellent. I'm sure I've heard the name before but this is the first time I've ever actually heard his music. The first thing that struck me was how much it reminded me of Giant Sand, only bluesier. The second thing that struck me was how interesting and well crafted the lyrics were and no wonder, he's the son of Lonesome Dove author, Larry McMurtry (one of my all-time favorite novels).

So anyone have suggestions for a good starting point?

One of my favourites by J.M. is his '98 release - Walk between the Raindrops.
A solid album and a great place to start.

I hope ACL starts putting out some more DVDs soon. I can tell this show was pretty new just because it was in hi-def so I didn't bother looking for a DVD. Lots of other recent ACL shows I would buy on DVD if they existed.

That would be a great place to start. I didn't even know about this album. I think that the three discs he cut for Sugar Hill are his best stuff, and "Walk between the Raindrops", the strongest for me.
    Have fun on your journey.

Yep, I'm a fan, although I haven't explored very many of his releases. I mean, c'mon, you gotta like a guy with a band called James McMurtry & the Heartless Bastards.

I have the 2005 release "Childish Things" around here somewhere. Joe Ely joins him on a couple of tunes on there if my memory is correct.

Pretty good Americana Roots meets Rock & Roll music.

I personally thought he was impressive as Jack Ruby in JFK.

    Oh ha ha

Dip your toes in with this, the epic "Choctaw Bingo" which specifically is the song that made me want to seek out some of his albums in the first place. Simple yet amazing song IMO:
