    Best of 00's ???
So really, what's the OK COMPUTER or LOVELESS or SPIDERLAND of the 00's ??

I really don't know what the critics are saying.

I seldom read much of anything music-related anymore..

most of my favorites are from earlier in the decade..

    10, no, 11.. that I really like..

    JUPITER by Cave In
EXCUSES FOR TRAVELLERS by Mojave 3
Ágætis byrjun by Sigur Ros (maybe it doesn't count..so what)
PERFECTING LONLINESS by Jets to Brazil (my sleeper masterpiece of the decade)
    YHF by Wilco
And the Glass Handed Kites by Mew
At War with the Mystics by The Flaming Lips (cuz, well, they're the Flaming Lips I guess)
    REMISSION by Mastodon
    WHITE PONY by the Deftones
LOW LEVEL OWL VOL. 1 by Appleseed Cast (still haven't heard Vol. 2..)
BLACKWATER PARK by Opeth (hadda addit)

I haven't really kept up much either, but I know Animal Collective's Merriweather Post Pavillion is getting a ton of praise, but it's also a 2009 release. P4K picked Kid A, of all things, as the best of the decade.

For me, I have given it virtually no thought, but two that I keep coming back to are The Shins' Oh, Inverted World and Okkervil River's Black Sheep Boy. But then there was Blessed Black Wings and The Meadowlands and probably a bunch I'm not thinking of off the top of my head.

Fuck yeah The Meadowlands. Or the Constantines - Shine a Light.

I will think about this and come back to this thread tomorrow.

and I forgot that crazy romp of an album that is the self-titled BROKEN SOCIAL SCENE..

I definitely need more Shins and Wrens in my life.. and I'll be checking the library for that Animal Collective..

and as much as I *appreciate* KID A.. I just haven't connected with it, so it wouldn't make my top 10 or even 20.. but then there's "How to Disappear Completely" which, OTOH, is one of the best songs of the decade..

The metadata at Metacritic say that Spoon was the bestest band of the decade. And who am I to argue?

Oh, and it's great to see you, Jar. Don't be a stranger, man.

    EDIT: Actually, here's a link that's even more on-topic...

What's new, Jar? Good to see you.

You like the s/t Broken Social Scene better than You Forgot It In People? I have not heard the s/t, but I really like YFIIP a lot.

I haven't contemplated a list or anything, but Midlake's The Trials Of Van Occupanther has to be on there. PT's In Absentia also.

    Let's see:

    Porcupine Tree - In Absentia
Wilco - Sky Blue Sky (though I mighta picked The Album)
    Kino - Picture This (maybe)
Death Cab For Cutie - Plans
    My Morning Jacket - Z
Echolyn - The End Is Beautiful
Muse - Black Holes & Revelations
Ritual - The Hemulic Voluntary Band
The Shins - Wincing The Night Away
    Marillion - Marbles

Of course, this list is subject to change at a moments notice ;)

As for Animal Collective's Merriweather Post Pavillion - what a mess of an album. It gives Olias Of Sunhillow a run for its money with regards to over production.

If I had to pick only one album that summarized the 00's for me it would have to be Green Day's American Idiot.

This album was musically great. It is the masterpiece of a band that's been around for quite a while and proven that they have staying power. Green Day has had commercial success while still managing to remain on the fringe. And the theme of the disk encompasses much of the political turmoil that we have all lived through in the last decade.

While there are many disks that I have loved and still love in the last 10 years, this is my OK Computer.

I have no problem with putting American Idiot on a Top 10 of the Decade list.

In absolutely no order at all...
    The aforementioned Idiot
    Radiohead... Kid A
Built to Spill... Ancient Melodies of the Future
    My Morning Jacket... Z
    New Pornographers... Twin Cinema
    Spoon... Gimme Fiction
    REM... Accelerate
    Porcupine Tree... Deadwing
    Arcade Fire... Funeral
    Wilco... YHF

I feel pretty good about that list. Throw in PJ Harvey's Stories from the City... as an honorable mention, if you like.

Things probably change by the minute, but looking over the spines of my record collection, here are fifteen albums that I absolutely can't imagine having spent the last decade without:

Life Without Buildings - Any Other City
Ted Leo & The Pharmacists - The Tyranny of Distance
The Avalanches - Since I Left You
Songs: Ohia - Didn't It Rain (and The Magnolia Electric Company)
Joanna Newsom - The Milk-Eyed Mender
Rapider Than Horsepower - Stage Fright Stage Fright, This Is My Big Night
Mirah - You Think It's Like This But Really It's Like This (and Advisory Comittee)
Jens Lekman - Oh, You're So Silent Jens (and When I Said I Wanted to Be Your Dog)
Signal to Trust - Golden Armour
The Make Believe - s/t EP
Jonathan Richman - Her Mystery Not of High Heels and Eyeshadow (and Not So Much to Be Loved As To Love and Because Her Beauty Is Raw and Wild)
Consonant - s/t (and Mission of Burma - The Obliterati)
The Constantines - Shine a Light
    USAISAMONSTER - Tasheyana Compost
Nina Nastasia & Jim White - You Follow Me

The Ted Leo and Joanna Newsom records would make my list. Hey have you seen the video of Ted Leo's band doing the Misfits set on Halloween? Great stuff.

I have not heard those Jens Lekman (but I really like Night Falls Over Kortedala), those J. Richman albums, and I really need to revisit the Consonant, Constantines, and USAISAMONSTER albums. You like Shine a Light better than the self-titled album?

Out of the shadows, huh? I might as well go back to using my old name-- evidently there are no NRBQ fans around here. I was wondering if you were still around!

Gene, you absolutely have to get Oh, You're So Silent Jens (which is actually a collection of 7"s that all came out around the same time). It's easily his definitive work.

Yeah, I like Shine a Light, but that was my first exposure to them. I think Jar called it Fugazi-meets-Springsteen and he's totally right.

I haven't listened to that USAISAMONSTER album for a while, but I absolutely wore it out when it was new, along with other stuff that was in that same racket-in-a-basement genre like Need New Body - U.F.O., the Lightning Bolt catalog, Skoal Kodiak - Three People are Having Grape Emergencys, Ultra-Dolphins, etc.

I haven't seen the Ted Leo/Misfits thing, but have you seen this? How do I embed a video here?:

Good to see you, Rae. And good to see the old Rave Recs girl, too!

I didn't know a thing about the Constantines when I saw them this summer at a big outdoor festival. It was starting to rain a bit, and the vibe before the show was definitely low-key. But they didn't care at all, they just came out and played a solid one-hour set of rough-and-ready, kick-ass bar rock. Weather be damned. Put everyone's mood right for the rest of the day!

I think Jay is an NRBQ fan (or likes at least one of their albums). I saw them live and thought they really sucked.

That video is great. Here's part 1 (of 6) of the Halloween concert:

    <object width="560" height="340"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/S0ebbwd4vRo&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/S0ebbwd4vRo&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="560" height="340"></embed></object>

P.S. I just copy and paste the embed code from YouTube or whatever video site and it works.

I do feel quite a bit of guilt over that... part of what kept me away for so long. I just have to resolve not to take on commitments that I can't honor. But yeah, maybe someday.
