Don't ask me why, I just can't let it go...

    New Pornographers - Twin Cinema
    New Pornographers - Mass Romantic
Boy - Every Page You Turn
    Engineers - S/T
Elbow - Leaders of the Free World
Bedouin Soundclash - Sounding A Mosaic
    Jann Arden - Greatest Hurts
Death Cab for Cutie - Plans
Dogs Die In Hot Cars - Please Describe Yourself
    Deadly Snakes - Porcella
Spirit of the West - (not sure which one, it was in Hubby's truck)
Kevin Gilbert - The Shaming of the True.

And I watched the first half of Green Days' Bullet In A Bible DVD. Great DVD but the sound quality is very inconsistent.

I have been enjoying Frank Zappa Guitar.

Also been listening to Pandora internet radio. You pick a song or group and it creates a station with all similar tunes/artists. You tell it if you like or dislike what they pick and eventually it plays all what you like. You can configure up to 100 personal stations.

The Tuesday thread isn't the only thing dead here.

Got my mitts on a Creatures bootleg that freaking rules. Occasionally I take a break and spin a Siouxsie bootleg. Got a DVD of an 81 German performance that should be ready to view any day now so I'm looking forward to that.

On the non-bootleg side I did go out today and grab Action Action which holds a bit of promise. Very much a poppier version of the Faint so buyer beware. I think I'll enjoy it but 'tis too soon to tell.

Also grabbed that She Wants Revenge disc that Jar mentioned the other day. Just had time to give it a skip button aided glance so far. I dunno, makes no effort to update anything as far as I can tell, which isn't all that far. The jury isn't out, it hasn't even been seated yet.

That's about it. Still jacking around with a lot of gear issues. Just got my MX 700 remote control. The 76 page manual was a bit daunting but I'm making progress. In the end this better make my life easier or I'm going to be royally pissed. Today I also added 25 lbs of lead shot to the speakers as the manual suggests. Actually it made a surprising difference in terms of bass impact, and they weren't especially shabby in that area before.

Anyway, need to do some room treatments to improve acoustics and then I can begin the hunt for the first killer album of 2006 in earnest.

    Tuesday Again?
Caravan & The New Symphonia - the band didles with a symphony back in 1973.

Proto-Kaw - Before Became After. I don't know, this got raving reviews but I must be missing something. I'll have to listen some more. It just doesn't have the musical hooks that Kansas had. It is heavier though than I expected it to be.

David Myers Plays Genesis. Myers was the keyboard player in The Musical Box from their start until 2004. Here he plays a number of older Genesis tunes on the grand piano.

Okay, FA. Are you trying to tell me that you listened to all of those albums today? Or is the Tuesday thread for all of the albums you listened to in the past week?
  • 01-31-2006, 01:37 PM
    Mr MidFi
My listening pleasure has been pretty much more of the same this week, I'm afraid. But I did do something interesting (and off-topic) this week that I'd like to share.

After putting up with the hassles of vision-correction for over 30 years, I finally got my eyeballs lasered on Friday. It was fast and relatively painless (after the first 5 hours or so), and now I can see 20/20 without contacts or glasses.

Sorry to jack the thread, but I'm pretty torqued up over this. Carry on.

    Lately:

The 88 - Over and Over
I expected something a little more on the punk side (not sure why) but this is heavily Beatles and Kinks influenced. Nice, but haven't spent a ton of time with it yet.

    Boris - Akuma No Uta
Wow, this is some rockin' sh*t. Good stuff, but I wish they didn't have the space-pop interludes.

High On Fire - Blessed Black Wings
I can't get enough of this one.

Bob Dylan - John Wesley Harding
In my estimation, one of his best albums.

Gang Gang Dance - God's Money
I've only listened to this once, but my reaction was: WTF is this?

Bonnie "Prince" Billie - I See a Darkness

    Kraftwerk - The Man-Machine

    BradH
Otis Redding - Otis Blue (MoFi Ultradisc)
    Iron Butterfly - Metamorphosis
Earth, Wind & Fire - That's The Way Of The World (MoFi Ultradisc)
    Parliament - P-Funk Earth Tour
Earth, Wind & Fire - All N All
    Captain Beyond
Isaac Hayes - Hot Buttered Soul (MoFi Ultradisc)
    Gong - Gazeuse!
    Parliament - Motor Booty Affair
    The Syn - Joe's Pub, NYC Jan 8, 2006
Funkadelic - One Nation Under A Groove
Earth, Wind & Fire - The Eternal Dance Rarities (I picked these out of the 3-disc set)

That may have been more than one week. I just grabbed the stack and started typing.

English Settlement is in heavy rotation when I grab the Carvin lately. (I don't want to have to actually learn anything new. Sort of an air guitar mentality, I guess.)

I was going to tell you to "do the math genius", but after looking at the list and since I didn't post until after 3:00pm, I guess that it could be possible that I did listen to all those disks today....if I didn't sleep. But since we share genetic sleeping habits..."do the math genius!". :p

And you should be torqued up! Congratulations Mr M. I can only imagine how great it must feel to wake up in the morning, open your eyes, and be able to see clearly. I too have been wearing glasses full-time for 30 years. I would give up my entire CD collection and all future purchases to have unassisted 20/20 vision. But I'm not a good candidate for long-term success with this surgery. You, however, enjoy your new eyes!!

    Ditto!!

I've been toying with the idea, myself.

    Way to go, Mr. M.

My week has not been too musical.

    In short,

Bobby Bare -- The Moon Was Blue
Jackson Browne -- Saturate Before Using & Late For the Sky
    U2 - War
The Who - My Generation (Deluxe Edition)

Took a break from new music (cleansing the old palatte with comfortably old music), other than the Bobby Bare which sounds good'n'old, any way.

So you think Mr. Midfi is torqued up?
I would tell you that I'm even more torqued up because my son is home after his one-year tour of duty in Baghdad. I feel a whole lot better when I go to sleep at night and when I wake up in the morning, and the rest of the day is pretty f<a>uckin' good too!

As for music, I already mentioned the first three on Sunday, but....

    Arizona Amp and Alernator
    Clear Lake - Amber
    Cat Power - The Greatest
    Sufjan Stevens - Illinoise
    The Decemberists - Picaresque
    Over the Rhine - Ohio

Oh yeah, I also got my hands on two of my favorite foreign film DVDs: Jean De Florette and Manon of Spring. Both are the original MGM releases and they weren't cheap, but I had to have 'em. It took me months of bidding on e-bay and bartering on Amazon to finally land them. Both are used by in perfect condition...well, close to perfect anyway. We watched the first on Saturday and will see the other this weekend. They are actually Parts 1 and 2 of the same story if you're familiar with them. Great stuff!

Hey, wasn't that the one about the little girl who's father had a humpback then she grows up and sticks it to those two freaky neighbors of hers? If that's the one then those were awesome films.

Congrats to you and your son.

You people here are sooooooo weird.

    That's why I fit in 100%.

Kerry Livgren - One of several Possible Musics - acoustic instrumental fluff. zzzz.

Pendragon - Believe. The new one. Typical Pendragon stuff.

    PT - Warazawa - good.

The Fixx - React. I doggoned LOVE The Fixx. Muy Excelente.

Gary Numan - Living Ornaments 1981. Uh huh live Numan. Wish there was video...

Thin Lizzy - Johnny the Fox - excellent. On vinyl to boot.

The Police - Synchronicity concert, laserdisc. I was at this gig. Best part? Stewart Copeland on drums. That guy was awesome. Sting of sourse had the chicks throwing panties at him (must be nice)

I actually figured out the "big surprise" at the end of Manon of Spring, but I'm probably not the first one. They're two great movies though, even if the ending was a bit predictable. They just don't make 'em like that any more.

Yeah, I really like it, but it's my intro to this band. Have you heard their other stuff? If so, is it similar to Akuma No Uta?

Just moved house so things are a bit hectic, all the systyem and CD's packed up but thank god for car players and ipods.

Fortunately managed to leave a few out so had time to listen to....

Cat Power - The Greatest, this is really really good, I was a mild fan but now I'm converted.

Bonnie Prince Billy - The Brave and The Bold, lots of cover versions that are a bit of a yawn so far but it's early days yet I suppose, maybe I wasn't in the mood.

Artic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I Am, pretty much what I expected and it's ok, the vocalist has a great style.

    Cheers
