Does anyone have any suggestions for the best sounding, cost-effective way to interface an ipod with a home stereo?

I'd say use apple's ipod dock with the line out, or a third party solution like the sendstation

Don't need a dock. You can get a line-level out right from the bottom of the iPod, straight to RCA: http://playlistmag.com/products/complete/138-detail.php
Yeah, that works even better (fewer electrical connections).
