"For What It's Worth" 'Buffalo Springfield'
"There's a Man With A Gun Over There...
I think this is worth repeating once in a while, especially for the younger members who haven't YET experienced the Folly...
There is Freedom in the Realization of Futility...

Used to be the theme music for some CBC radio show; don't remember which ...
    There's something happening here
What it is ain't exactly clear
There's a man with a gun over there
Telling me I got to beware
I think it's time we stop, children, what's that sound
    Everybody look what's going down
    There's battle lines being drawn
    Nobody's right if everybody's wrong
    Young people speaking their minds
Getting so much resistance from behind
I think it's time we stop, hey, what's that sound
    Everybody look what's going down
What a field-day for the heat
A thousand people in the street
    Singing songs and carrying signs
Mostly say, hooray for our side
It's time we stop, hey, what's that sound
    Everybody look what's going down
    Paranoia strikes deep
Into your life it will creep
It starts when you're always afraid
You step out of line, the man come and take you away
We better stop, hey, what's that sound
    Everybody look what's going down
    Stop, hey, what's that sound
    Everybody look what's going down
    Stop, now, what's that sound
    Everybody look what's going down
    Stop, children, what's that sound
    Everybody look what's going down

I voted no relevant lyrics today ... though if you're a drugged up misogynist Rap might do it for you.

Slightly off topic but I've been enjoying Keb' Mo's version of this tune.

Variations of this thread pop up here and in other music forums on other sites. There are some songs /groups out there that are producing songs regarding social protest or of a political theme but they are not as common or in many ways quite as good. I suppose there are several reasons for it but probably the most important is that there is not a market for it. The protest or commentary songs of the 60's-early 70's had a ready made audience that was out there living the lyrics so to speak of a lot of those songs. Remember "Four Dead in OHIO... was not just a lyric it actually happened. As a result people and recording companies were trying to reach a market which really does not exist today. They are some talented songwriters out there today that might be capable (and in some cases have) of putting out similar songs if they saw the need.

Some of it is also looking at it with a bit of a slanted view about the times. Remember that at the same time Dylan was writing some of his great social songs of the 60's there were also hits like "Teensy Weensy Yellow Polk-A-Dot Bikini" and Guitarzan" etc. hitting the air.......

    The Dumb-ing Numb-ing Succumb-ing Plot Thickens
The Tragedies of the 60's;'Nam,Dr.King,Kennedy,Ohio,Nixon,"ad infinitum"on smaller scale. All of which escaped 'Do Justice' and 'Accountability' and 'Resolution',served to set the stage for what is happening NOW.Just think 'Bush' and all that encompasses. No need to reiterate the crimes of that regime that go 'Beyond the Pale' of all that preceeded it.The control of the Hearts,Minds, and Finances of America is complete. Please seek-out Alternative Sources of News not filtered through the Conglomerate Media Empire resulting in 'Pablum for the Masses'.The American Public has a Very Short Attention Span that explains the lack of 'Protest Songs'.(beside the fact that all media is owned by 'those who withold truth')
Also beside the fact that most believe or have become numb to the fact that it won't help or make a difference!! Please follow link in previous post if this upload fails.

The number of protest songs that suck giant hippo balls outweigh the number that don't. The message isn't more important than the music. Music first, message second, sucking is out.

    Hey Mr.3 pounds
Your Location reminded me of a chant I learned from my time in Tibet with John Lennon under the tutelege of the Maharishi Baba Ram Das...
    As follows;
Now here Be,Be Here Now,Now be Nowhere
    Or,if written in a circle,(which I can't do here)
    NOWHEREBEHERENOWBENOWHERENOWBEHEREBENOWHERE...ad infinitum...

it is too bad the older generations are so out of touch with the non pop music of today. there is a lot of anti establishment music but you obviously don't hear most of it on the radio. as well, for that that is played on the radio, probably isn't in the style of buff springs so why would you give it a second glance anyways?

reminds me of the time that my mom and i were listening to an NPR report of a NYT pos article saying the same thing. I flipped it over to Live105 and Sublime's Date Rape song played within a short time and my point was crystal f'cking clear.

open your ears and don't say dumb stuff like this.

I think maybe he's referring to protest in mainstream music? maybe? I still haven't made up my mind that he isn't a troll (he obviously doesn't understand what a poll is). But working on the premise that he's legit:

There was a very short time when protest music was mainstream but because its also associated with the so-called flower generation, it gets plenty of rotation on classic rock formatted radio. But yeah, plenty of protest music if you look for it. Alt country has plenty, some rock, older rap, hell, Porcupine Tree's Fear Of A Blank Planet is an album long social commentary.

'80s rap was filled with commentary and anti-establishment messages
Steve Earl's Jerusalem album from 2002. Might have seemed inappropriate at the time, but brave as hell. Neil Young's Living With War from '06.

Some great songs smattered here and there:

Kevin Gilbert's brilliant Goodness Gracious from 1994
David Baerwald's Siren's In The City from 1990
Ray Davies' Vietnam Cowboys from 2007

and those are just off the top of my head. I'd love it if a lot these social commentary pieces were outdated, unfortunately they're not.

    Goodness Gracious

Goodness Gracious is there nothing left to say?
When the ones that get to keep looking are the ones that look away
It's pabulum for the sleepers in the cult of brighter days

    Goodness Gracious
at the mercy of the crooks
We're broke and stroking vegetables and there's way too many cooks
In every pot a pink slip,
    In every mouth a hook

    Goodness Gracious
    I'm not listening anymore
Cause the spooks are in the White House and they've justified a war
So wake me when they notify we're gonna fight some more

    Goodness Gracious
    not many people care
Concern is getting scarcer true compassion really rare
I can see it on our faces.
I can feel it in the air
    Goodness Gracious me.

    Goodness Gracious
    my generation's lost
They burned down all our bridges before we had a chance to cross
Is it the winter of our discontent or just an early frost?

    Goodness Gracious
    of apathy I sing
The baby boomers had it all and wasted everything
Now recess is almost over and they won't get off the swing

    Goodness Gracious
we came in at the end
No sex that isn't dangerous, no money left to spend
We're the cleanup crew for parties we were too young to attend
    Goodness Gracious me.

    Goodness Gracious
    my grandma used to say
The world's a scary place now, things were different in her day
What horrors will be commonplace when my hair starts to grey?

    Kevin Gilbert
