Skype Anyone?
Does anyone here use Skype? What's your experience with it good and bad?
I am helping out a family friend who's in college and she wants to use it for video conferencing with friends.
Is it easy to use?
I can't access their web page due to my company's blocker.
Any help and advise would be greatly appreciated!

My wife and I use Skype all the time. My dad gets to see his grand-daughter growing up. And my wife gets to stay in touch with her sister in the Philippines.
What kind of help do you need?
Wifey set it up, but it doesn't seem hard to use.

I use it all the time to speak to relatives in England, Puerto Rico, and Cuba. It is great, and it requires no additional investment but a set of headphones/microphone. The rest comes with the price of internet.

JSE, there is no worry here for what you are trying to accomplish. It is easy peasy, and it works pretty damn well for both voice and video. The only thing to watch is how much activity is happening in the computer while on Skype. If you are doing a lot of processing, there can be lags and sync issues with the picture and audio. Using it in a wireless system is quite different than a wired system, latency and stability become an issue in a wireless setup(laptop connected wirelessly to a network).

Sounds like I should be able to get her up and running fairly easy. I'm pretty sure her apartment has a hard line for internet from what I remember so that should make it more stable per Sir T.
Would a WebCam/Microphone combo be sufficient for Video?

Yes, but don't cheap out too much. The video quality can be pretty crappy with some of those Wally World specials. We bought a Philps (the 2nd time around) and it works great.
Be careful though. I saw a report the other day saying how hackers can access your webcam without you knowing about it. (So becareful when you are watching porn Rich.)

Rich would crack under my pressure. Her 2 past boyfriends feared me! The 2nd one who recentlly broke up with her lives around the corner from me. The quickest route to his house is to drive by mine. The longer route, by about a mile, bypasses my house. I used to see him drive by my house all the time. Now, not so much. :devil:

I use Skype to call Japan every night for work.
Just a bit over 2 cents a minute, and no complaints on the sound quality.
I haven't tried the video.

Thanks for the help everyone, even GM & Rich who tried to get me fired up! :nono: Looks like something I can get set up for her pretty easily. I'll let you guys know how it goes. Probably be next weekend before she comes back to Houston so maybe I can get it done then.

I just recently started using Skype in december and i really like it. I use it to webcam my gf when she's in Hong Kong. Got myself a decent cam and it works great.
