Quotes that help guide me in life!
How far you go in life depends on your being tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving and tolerant of the weak and strong. Because someday in life you will have been all of these.

I believe it was my maternal grandmother who quoted this beatitude, "Blessèd are they who expectth little for they shall not be disappointed".

Isn't this quote from the same school of thought as..."In life, be nice to people on your way up because you will meet the same people on the way down."

    THE EIGHT BEATITUDES OF JESUS

"Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

    Blessed are they who mourn,
    for they shall be comforted.

    Blessed are the meek,
for they shall inherit the earth.

Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
    for they shall be satisfied.

    Blessed are the merciful,
    for they shall obtain mercy.

Blessed are the pure of heart,
    for they shall see God.

    Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they shall be called children of God.

Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."

My dad used to tell me, "be careful not to stand in the hole that you're digging".

A saying of my own ... It is easier to avoid temptation than it is to resist it.

A couple come to my mind. The first was said by a Lebanese girlfriend who encouraged me to persevere with my work noting that, while results may not be immediately appreciated or forthcoming, it would eventually payoff.

    "It'll show"

The second was mentioned by a male nurse, who I knew early in my stint as a hospital corpsman in the USN. I was working in the Labor and Delivery and Newborn Nursery units, and was over my head before I knew it. At one point he saw my near-panic and pulled me aside and said,

"Don't just do something, stand there".

As a freebie, I will include this quote by the actor Jimmy Smits, who was interviewed for the Cigar Aficianado. I keep it in my wallet in a safe place and turn to it now and then

"You just have to go with it. You have to take that kind of risk. I'm not afraid of risk or failure at all. There is no failure for me. Sure, the end result will hopefully live up to your dream of what it could be. But if you don't attempt something, you get back to that quote about not reading. You just can't have all the knots and loose ends ironed out; life is not that way. You just have to put it out there.

You have to step on the precipice".

My dad used to tell everyone that the best advice he could give them was that they should never listen to a word his son has to say.

Speaking of dear 'ol dad, one of his favorites was:
"What doesn't kill you, only makes you stronger"

to which my smart@ss brother would reply, using another one of dear 'ol dad's favorite sayings:
'Don't piss on my leg and tell me it's raining".
