Nobody's mentioned Phelps... Do you think he's being treated poorly or
does he deserve a break? Or if the one guy(police officer in SC) has his way, should criminal charges be brought against him? What do you think?

He definitely made a large faux pas being photographed taking a bong hit,(not a very smooth PR move either) but he's apologized, expressed regret and is only 23 yrs. old.

We are all familiar with his outstanding achievements, so where do you guys weigh in?

I think he should have saved some for me.

Don't really know. I don't think that anyone should be arrested for smoking grass. But I was, and don't think that he should get special treatment. I'm torn.

Since I am so jealous of everyone with more money and success than me, I say nail him!
Although this would explain the 12000 calories + he eats a day.

Seriously...dude screwed up and should get some punishment, but who here hasn't been busted for pot? Cut the guy some slack. At least he's not on roids.

Oh give me a break.. Ross Rebagliati won gold medal in the 1998 Winter Olympics in snowboarding, and then traced positive for marijuana in his system. All of Canada supported him, as they should have, and he managed to keep his medal. He's likely be back for the 2010 Olympics here in Vancouver.

I can't believe the level of hypocrisy in the States.. the media is blowing this way out of proportion, he's still a National Hero and an enormous athletic inspiration

    cheers,

Leave him the hell alone! He trained and worked hard to be the best and represent the US. He was on his own time and deserved to relax. Why the hell that stuff is not legal I do not know. Why is everyone in everyones private lives. He was a swimmer and he swam and broke records. That is all I need to know. Most people would not survive the level of scrutiny atheletes, politicians and stars are under.

Absolutely silly. How many members of our Congress do you suppose took a bong hit at least once in their lives? After all, they went to college. Who gets through college without experiencing pot?

Looks like his swim team is suspending him for 3 months (where he'd be inactive anyway) and that's about right here. Something has to be done because of the optics, but it's not like he killed a guy...

The bottom line is that he used poor judgment in allowing himself to be photographed. He just blew millions of dollars in endorsement money good bye.

I'm waiting for the Olympics to return to the Netherlands.

And I'm pretty sure pot isn't a "performance enhancing drug" either....

Maybe not. He can still hook up with a company that reaches for an under 40 or non-idiot demographic.

Initially, I didn't think that it was such a big deal.

However, it then came to light that when he was 19 he was convicted for DUI. That was one lapse of judgement.

Then he smokes a little pot. Not a big deal, other than the fact that 1) Its Illegal 2) He was dumb enough to be on camera doing it.

He is a great swimmer. We can't take that away from him. However, I don't think that it is "hipocracy" that people that spend millions of $$ on him would like someone with a little more judgement.

That's my soapbox. I'll get off now.
