It's this kind of propoganda that bugs me...

This letter was received in our office today by the company that owns our building...

On Saturday, March 28th, join tens of millions of people around the world and show your support for action on climate change by turning off your lights for Earth Hour. Earth Hour is a global lights-out event coordinated by World Wildlife Fund (WWF) that will bring together people from all over the world in support of action on climate change. More than 825 other major cities and 80 countries around the world are already participating including Sydney, Chicago and Copenhagen and more are signing on as the excitement builds.

What XXX Real Estate is doing to make a difference?

For the second year, XXX Canada Real Estate will join the initiative by powering down all non-essential HVAC and lighting in our office towers. For occupant safety, we will maintain all emergency lighting, elevators and all life safety systems. You could help us in sending a powerful but simple message during this period by simply remembering to turn off all computer monitors, task lighting and close all blinds when you leave the office on Friday, March 27th.

Toronto as a Flagship City has a goal to have at least one million people participate by turning off their lights and other non-essential electrical equipment and making the city as dark as possible for one hour. Everyone is encouraged to participate - residents and businesses alike. Show your commitment to fight climate change, and see the difference we can make when we all work together. Be one of the million!

On Saturday, March 28, 2009 participate in Earth Hour by turning off your lights and other non-essential electrical items from 8:30 P.M. to 9:30 P.M.

What can you do to make a difference?

Switching off your lights is a vote for Earth, or leaving them on is a vote for Global Warming. We are asking you to VOTE EARTH and help us reach the target of 1 billion votes, which will be presented to world leaders at the Global Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen 2009.

Turn off your lights, spread the word and help make a difference!

    • Visit online at www.earthhour.org and join the thousands of other residents and businesses committed to Earth Hour.
    • Tell your family and friends about Earth Hour and encourage them to register online at www.earthhour.org.

Don't get me wrong. I like the idea of Earth Hour to raise awareness. I do my best to help the evironment on a daily basis. But if I don't sit in the dark for one hour then I am voting for Global Warming? Come on. That's bull****.

If this company really cared about Global Warming then they would do what they can to reduce the energy their office towers expend on an ongoing basis, not just for one hour a year. I drive by our office tower regularly after dark and it's always lit up. I have been an advocate of dark towers after business hours for years. It not only helps the environment it saves thousand of birds a years. http://www.flap.org/

I don't know if I believe that global warming exists or not. As we've discussed in the past, I do believe that we should be doing our best to make this a healthy planet to live on. But to imply that I'm a bad person because I don't turn my lights off for an hour is offensive.

Albeit global warming is happening and is 99.9999999% probably due to human actions, I agree this stuff is annoying. Turning off your lights for an hour will do diddly-squat for the environment.

Now what would really help would be a carbon tax.

Yeah that stuff is kinda silly.

I guess it's just to "raise awareness" and I'm pretty sure nobody thinks they're contributing to a cooling or warmth-reduction factor but I could be wrong. Wonder what would happen if nobody did this stuff though? Would the global-warming battle be further behind? Perhaps in the court of public opinion.

They don't care if I participate. If they did then they wouldn't schedule it while the hockey game is on.

Although I am thinking about sending them a letter suggesting that if they really care that much then the lights should be turned off, or at least turned down, EVERY night.

...a vote against global warming. Puleeeese. I supposed if I don't participate then the terrorists win too.

Who can say for sure? But like Agent K said in Men In Black, "People are stupid. A person can be intelligent, but people are stupid".

Ignorant and unreasoning attitudes need to be combatted, e.g. Rich's attitude that a carbon tax is "liberal" or "socialist", and therefore presumably "bad".

Well, GM....Lessee...I am financially broke, the truck is one bolt away from complete collapse, I have mountains of schoolwork to catch up on and we are tired and pert near burned out. Either I stay home and watch the wife and her foot (which is healing, but that doesn't stop her from getting edgy when I call her "Hopalong") while hanging out with you guys or I go to the beach, where the sand is white as snow and the bikinis are smaller and....shooooooot!
