    How About Those Leafs...

8 wins in a row, and they are now the team with the best record in the League.

Lord Stanley, can I book you a room in the Leaf Cup Cabinet?

Lot of hockey left to play yet. Way too soon to make reservations.

Everyone doubted that the Leafs were a Cup contender. As much as I've wanted to believe that they are best team all the time, in the last few years the team has been really strong, but we lacked the two or three big names that could push us to the 'elite' group of NHL teams.

Now with Nieuwendyk in the team, and Nolan finally playing the way he should be, the Leafs I believe are a Cup contender. During this winning streak they have knocked off Vancouver twice, hammered Boston and Atlanta, got past Ottawa and made Detroit look like a pee-wee team. All these teams are at the top of the League right now.

With the Leaf fans behind 'em, we'll be marching down Yonge Street next summer while you are boarding up the windows of your trailer home hoping Hurricane Helga doesn't destroy your park.

With one third of the season played Philadelphia looks to be the team to beat. Why? 27 GP, 17 W, 3 L, 6 T, 1 OTL, 41 points. I'll give you that Toronto is up there this season. For that matter, so are the Lightning. However, with 53 games left it is still far too early to make reservations for Lord Stanley. First things first and the first thing you must do is make the playoffs.

    Take your blinders off...

You really must live in a trailer park if you think the Lightning are doing well. They hold the last playoff spot at the moment and are 13 points behind the Conference and League leading Leafs. Up there? Come on now, Jim Bob. You must be all caught up with the Sadam saga.

    How 'bout those Blackhawks!

They are doing pretty well this season, by their standards of course. An aveage of a half point per game. Not too shabbily done. When did they win the Cup last?

At least you have the Cubbies.

..........The leafs will burn themselves out trying to take first over all. They will have nothing left for the playoffs. It's happened before. Detroit for example. They should get rid of Sundin. Can't count on him. He does'nt show up for the playoffs. Most leaf fans I know don't even watch after the leafs go out. I watch right to the end. The leafs don't have it. The regular season means nothing other than making the playoffs. Home ice advantage also means nothing. The teams that can stay disciplined are the ones that can go all the way. Playoff hockey is altogether different hockey. Lord Stanley in the leafs trophy case? I've heard it over and over year after year. As far as the blackhawks go they are the only team that has gone the longest without a cup. Toronto has gone the second longest. Most toronto fans were not even here the last time they won the cup. What I hear leaf fans say and what the media say does not coincide with what I see on the ice.

    Zapr,

Are you a Sabres fan in disguise?

The Leafs are one star forward away from going all the way. Yes, they do have a really tough schedule in the sense that they play alot of games. But they ARE one of only 4 or 5 truly elite teams in the NHL: Philly, Detroit, Ottawa, and Colorado (the last two not completely playing to their potential thus yet in the season).

Look at this point: even though they got severely arse-pumped by the Sens tonight, lost to Boston and the Islanders around the turn of the year, the Leafs still have the most points. Don't forget that they have done this all without Mogilny, who will add some dynamics when he returns.

And what non-sense are you talking about Sundin? Get rid of him you say? Let's get rid of you. Sundin is a Leaf legend, and a crowd favourite. He has the most GWG in Leaf history. I won't say more than that.

We will just have to wait and see what happens, won't we.

.......No no no. Darryl Sittler is a leaf legend. I'll give you Sundin is a good hockey player, above average, the best hockey I saw him play was a few yrs ago with the Swedish national team. His style of play was impressive. He fit in with the national teams free flowing potent offence. He played much better than he plays with the leafs. The problem with Sundin is he can't handle pressure. He's no captian. GWG, impressive! Sorry but statistics won't bring Lord Stanley. He's never been a crowd favorite at post season time. Think of it this way, what could they get for Sundin? Maybe the star forward you speak of.Someone you can count on.You're right. Will see!

You don't like the Leafs, do you. Might you liven in western Canada?

Yes, Sittler is a legend. But, you make it sound like he was a better player than Sundin. Sundin would skate circles around the 27. Sittler was the best player on a team that played like amateurs.

..........You're right.......I don't like the leafs. I live 2 hrs west of Toronto, and no I'm not a Detroit or Buffalo fan either.I'm a fan of hockey but if I had to choose I would have to pick the oilers. I was a big oiler fan during the 80's. No Sittler was not a better player than Sundin but I would'nt call Sundin a legend. I gave up on the leafs yrs. ago when they played a dump and chase, bump and grind style of play. It was boring to watch. Every one made excusses for them when they lost. The leafs can do no wrong no matter what. When the leafs win it's because they are great. When they lose there is always an excuse. It's never said they were beat by a better team. I can see what happens on the ice so don't lie to me . The Toronto media is so biased it makes me sick. I love to see the leafs beat just because of it. After the home at home with the flyers, it's clear the leafs are NOT an elite team. No disrespect to you or anyone else but I love it when they lose. I think it looks good on them........Zapr

Doesn't that make your little flag-waving brainwashed a$$ happy. OOOOOOH, the Lightning are first in the Conference. What are we going to do? Well let's see if a team from Florida actually does something other than get eliminated from the playoffs. As for the Leafs, fear the wrath of Belfour and Mogilny, white bread.

I know how the standings work, Yank.

It truly irritates you that a team from a state where it rarely snows is up there in the standings.

Toronto's got some excellent goal tending and will do well in the playoffs. Ottowa is up there too. If there is any team which it would scare me for the Lightning to face, it's Ottowa.

Last season the Bolts made it to the second round of the playoffs, losing in OT a couple of times to the Devils. This season, if you take out the 20 game slump we had earlier, the Lightning have a winning percentage of 0.795 and have done extremely well on the road. I see no reason why we shouldn't make it to the conference finals, if not the final battle for Lord Stanley's Cup.

The playoffs are coming and things will get interesting.

........The bolts are doing well now only because they have no pressure on them. They are not expected to win and they know it. Once the playoffs come about they will fall apart. I would expect Ottawa to choke again so I would'nt worry about them. Toronto? They'll take a hard run for the cup, probably the best run since 93. Remember Gretzky in game 7? Man that was sweet. Sorry Hand. Colorado,Detroit,Philly, and then there's the Devils. My attention will be on the leafs. I'll admit they're making me nervous but I don't think they'll let me down. Once they are gone then we can settle down for some real playoff hockey. Ok, I'll give the leafs a compliment, they are the best golfers in the NHL.........Zapr

Wouldn't be so certain of that. The Lightning are doing well now because they've been scoring (had four of the top six point scorers in the NHL in February) and their goaltenders have been playing well. I don't foresee us losing those items come playoff time.

We took down the Devils 3-2 in OT on Friday (their trap always gives us problems) and whipped the Panthers 5-3 Saturday. Tonight will be an excellent test as we face off against the Red Wings. The top two teams in the NHL going at it. With a win tonight we win the division and remain in the hunt for the #1 seed in the conference.

.......Go Bolts!........Hope they can stay disciplined. Nothing would make me happier than to see the lightning succeed in the playoffs while the leafs are down there golfing. Hey, after the leafs finish their golf game they could take in a good hockey game:]..........Zapr.

Watched last nights game between the Wings and Bolts. Legace was standing on his head and was awesome in net! He will be an outstanding goalie for years to come for the Wings. It was a 1 - 1 tie but a fun game, full of action and incredible saves by Khabibulin and Legace. The crowd certainly got their monies worth! My hats off to both teams for an excellent game!

Can somebody tell me the last time a #1 seed went all the way and took home the Cup? Hockey seems to be the sport where regular season record and home field/court/ice matters the least come playoff time. Just look at what happened to Detroit and Dallas last year when they ran into a hot goalie.

How 'bout those Leafs? Lord Stanley's Cup will not be taking up residence in the Leafs Cup cabinet this year.

Looks like the finals are set:

Tampa Bay vs. Philadelphia in the Eastern Conference. Definate rivalry here not only between the teams but the cities as well. With any luck at all I'll be at Saturday's game.

San Jose vs. Calgary in the Western Conference. San Jose looks like the team of destiny to end up in the Stanley Cup Finals. Don't see Calgary getting by them. In either case my money would be on the East to win in this year.

    My $0.02 prediction:

Lightning vs. Sharks with the Lightning winning in 5.

........Go leafs go.......they're finally GONE.......HOORAY! Congrats to the bolts. They have surprised me. From what I have seen from the flames, they could get by the sharks. In any case we're in for some exciting hockey!
