    Happy freakin' holidays to me

Go figure, 3 weeks off work and on the eve of day 2 Kex gets put on the IR.
Took a nasty hit from behind into the net the other night in a hockey game I was playing in. No hard feelings to the guy that hit me, he was a doctor, looked right after me and actually was the one that drove me to the hospital - he was just trying to clear me out of the crease after we crashed the net and I was streched out vulnerable trying to tap in a rebound...perfect storm. Dunno if it was the check or the impact of my face hitting the crossbar snapping my neck and back in reverse that did it. I don't remember the play but I'm glad I had that helmet on or I'd me eating Christmas turkey through a straw now.

The verdict...not sure yet, had xrays done, doc doesn't think it's anything too serious, but I can barely move the lower half of my body without excruciating pain. This feels like a muscle tear or pull...lots of spasms....the drugs I'm on are great though (generic Tylenol 3 I think?), it's like being drunk without the consequences. I spilled hot coffee on my leg and barely felt it....Muscle relaxants tomorrow though
I had a slight case of herniated disc years ago and have some scar tissue in the back that has given me troubles, this feels about the same kind of pain so that's my guess - re-aggravation. The gym is off limits for 2 weeks minimum, which sucks this time of year cause I have a bit of a bet and a personal goal going on squats which I was going to nail for sure until this...

    Oh well.

My wife gets to look after me for the next 10 days or so... I see my espresso glass is empty...

Could be worse..I still have all my teeth. But it's killing me to see the 2 feet of snow outside and know I won't be skiing...

I just turned 30 three weeks ago...so go easy on my fragile ego...

There is an ancient technique similar to that of Accupuncture. It's called Accumassage. And the pressure point for a neck/head injury is coincidently located in the groin.

Make sure your wife gives you daily "treatments" and you are sure to clear up in no time.

Oh Kex! That just totally sucks. I feel for you man. I have back problems and many years ago I threw my back out so badly that I couldn't stand up for three weeks. We had to have a doctor make a house call because I was in so much pain I couldn't walk to the car to get to the hospital. I wouldn't wish that kind of pain on my worst enemy.

What a way to have to spend your vacation! On the bright side, you're sure the get that R&R you so badly needed. Just nestle in with some good books and movies and make the best of it. Although, once you get the muscle relaxants, you're most likely to just sleep through the next couple of weeks.

Good luck. Keep us posted on your progress. And try to have a Merry Christmas in spite of it all.

Damn....you win. I'm not quite that bad...I can actually lift myself up, and sort of walk along the wall in a hunched, lobsided position...stairs are a problem, and apparently picking up a box of cereal is too hard still. I'm guessing I'll be walking without assistance by tomorrow or Friday. Funny though, it hurts way worse today than it did yesterday.

For sure...come to think of it, 75% of my plans are still on...loafing around, watching movies, playing games, reading books, listening to music...don't need mobility for that. My beer arms are both functional

No worries, I'll be ok...my snowmobile is taunting me in the garage though...

I tried telling my wife what Doctor Beef said but she suggested the procedure involved an unpleasant technique involving her boot and my rectum. Seeing as how I'm currently dependent on her for food, I'm not pressing the issue...

    You're such a liar!

Here's a funny 'karma' story for you. Last week, as you know, I suggested to Hubby that we buy a snowblower and he decided that we should wait. Then we got hit with two big snow storms and had to shovel the driveway and the whole time I was cursing him and making him feel bad.

Okay, this part isn't funny...On Saturday I punctured my hand with the sharp edge of a tin can while trying to shove it into an overflowing recycling bin. I cut my finger up pretty badly.

The part that's funny is that we've had two more snowfalls since Saturday and I get to watch Hubby shovel the whole driveway by himself because I can't put any pressure on my hand to lift the shovel.

I'll bet that he's wishing he had that snowblower now.

Wow, nothing like a good laceration story to cheer you up when you're feeling down.
Those kinds of cuts are always the most painful too...anything on the hands or fingers. Ouch. Hope it's on the mend.

We've used our snowblower 4 times in the last week. What a marvelous invention. I actually enjoy getting up at 5:30 AM, bundling up, and taking on mother nature now. It's so much fun because you remember how hard and sucky shoveling snow at 5:30 AM used to be when you see your neighbors struggling away. How big is your driveway? Ours is about 85 ft long, and over 2 vehicles wide. It's about 3 times the size of the one we had last year. We had 35 cm's Monday morning...Shoveling would have been grounds for divorce.

Next time he comes in all tired and cranky after shoveling the snow, remind your husband what happened to my rotator cuff, and how many practices I missed with my band because I couldn't even play an instrument...maybe then he'll come around.

The hand is healing fine thanks. It hurts like hell if I put any kind of pressure on the cut, but the important thing is that now that its been a few days I can play my guitar again.

Gee, rotator cuff, back injury, didn't you break your hand last year too? You're pretty accident prone, eh?

Hey, I had another paragraph in that post...where the hell did it go?!

What I also said was that our driveway holds four cars. Plus we have a sidewalk on our side of the street so there's more to shovel between the street and the sidewalk. And because we have the sidewalk, we get get three drifts from the plows. One at the street and one on each side of the sidewalk. I'm sure glad that I don't have to shovel all that. (snicker).

Last year our house had a single drive that was barely long enough for Hubby's pick-up truck.

We're supposed to have a warm snap this week. It's 6C out right now and the snow is melting. It's supposed to go up to 10C on Saturday! I hope that the weatherman is right this time.

Really sorry to hear about your accident, Kex...! What's gonna happen to your "Remote Thumb"?

All seriousness, stay on top of that pain. Before things get out of hand, even as you feel the twinge coming on, take those relaxants and painkillers.

And while you're lying there, tell me: "What are the good things you remember about...your mother....?"*

It gets rougher from here. Assuming you continue to play I recommend taking up swimming, and as much as possible, in the offseason. Yeah, the cardio's great but it'll strengthen all those muscles you forgot you had...often the ones you tweak when taking an awkward tumble.

Doctor or no, I hope the coach had someone go out and exact a terrible retribution for this. Preferably someone with a 70's porno 'stache...it's all the rage, eh?

    Kex

Hope you get to feeling better soon. Hopefully you will still be able to suit after this incident. It drives me nuts on a regular basis that my bad knees prevent me from stepping out on to the court, so play any sport you can until you drop.

I do have some fond memories of Tylenol-3 myself which was given to me after I tore up a shoulder. Used to take them on an empty stomach and it produced quite a pleasant effect. In retrospect it was probably not the brightest thing to do.

Thanks for the kind words folks...

Added a bit of insult to injury yesterday falling down the last few stairs. If this was a movie about someone else I'd be laughing pretty hard. My wife still is. Not sure what happened, but putting weight on my back hurts right now, so when I made it to the last few stairs some pain shot up my body and my legs just gave out and down I went. So much for my attempt to sneak downstairs for some punkin' pie at 2 am. Don't think I made it worse or anything but it was a bit awkward to be rolling on the floor writhing in agony with my mother in law standing over me wondering what the hell was going on...dog started barking (good boy) to let everyone know what dope I am and out they all came...doh.

Anyway, I'm doing okay, but I'm not healing as fast as I thought I would and I think it's just starting to sink in that the doc really meant 2-4 weeks.

bobsticks: Swimmin' huh? I'm gonna need a new speedo. Maybe I can wear it in the squat rack too...there wasn't much for retribution cause the guy who hit me drove me to the hospital and a lot of the other team were my teammates' clients...that's dirty hockey
My goalie got kicked out of the game for going Ron Hextall on someone in the last 2 minutes apparently though. Come to think of it, I never did find out if we won.

FA: Doing ok. I'm just not patient and try to move around, help out, sneak late night snacks (see above). My own worst enemy. Still have all 10 digits on my hands though

thekid: as long as my knees hold up I'll still play whatever I can. I won't make any promises of playing well, however.

Auricauricle: Good advice...the first 48 hrs I just tried using the meds sparingly. I seem to build up tolerances to painkillers quickly and I'm probably a bit paranoid about using them. Bad mistake though...there's a good 1 hr lag between the time you know the meds are fully wore off and the time they send you back to la-la land. I seem to have a problem following instructions on the prescription label.

Well...I'm off to the ski hills this morning...j/k.

If your worried about building up tolerances, see what your doc has to say about alternating your med with another. The trick to controlling the pain is to keep it in check. Don't wait 'til the last minute, when the pain is upon you and you "need" to take it, but at regular intervals (as you say, read the label). Don't shy away from getting up (with assistance!) and walking about and trying a few "range of motion" exercises. Move your neck (slowly!) and back (carefully!), and don't give the bod a chance to "heal" in an unnatural--and eventually painful and hard to recover from--position.

Good advice from our resident nurse.

Kex, I throw my back out a few times a year. Sometimes it just lasts a couple of days and a few Advil or Robax are all I need and other times its much worse and I have to pull out the anti-inflamatories and muscle relaxants.

I find two things outside of medication very helpful. The first is therapeudic massage by a registered massage therapist. A good RMT will be able to massage around the injured area without touching the injury. The last time I threw my back out I couldn't stand straight or take long strides when I walked. I shuffled in, hunched over, to see my masseuse and walked out of there standing tall. When things started to tighten up again a few days later I went in again for a second treatment. My employee health plan covers me for 80% of the cost with a doctor's referral. The referral is usually good for a year's worth of services. Check your group plan to see if you're covered and, even if you're not, go anyway...but make sure you see a registered therapist who is trained in healing and not just someone who can do a nice little relaxing spa-type massage. That won't help, and could actually make it worse.

The second thing is walking. Once the pain is bearable, keeping my muscles active is the best thing that I can do for them. Keeping active stops the muscles from tightening up again. The more I can walk the faster I heal. But don't push it. Walking might be slow and uncomfortable, but it should never be excruciatingly painful. You just want to walk enough to keep the muscles limber.

Hmmm, yeah, my doc threw the masseuse/chiro thing out there. I have a plan that would cover that stuff so maybe I should take advantage. Saw doc yesterday and he's very convinced I've herniated a disc again. Since I'm feeling pain and not numbness or tingling, and for the most part retain full motion we're not doing the MRI for now...just rest and time.

I have been getting a fair amount of light walking in and I do a lot of stretches several times per day which sure helps.
Waking up in the morning is neat...the pain is at a minimum until I actually try to move and then it hurts everywhere. Things must seize up, cause after a few coffee it's dialed back some.
Yeah I was doing quite well after I broke my hand/fingers a few years back. That was a lot more gnarly to see anyway.

    Thanks Auri,

Doc's pretty convinced it's a herniated disc again. Haven't done an MRI yet but he's pretty convinced and doesn't think he needs it. My back muscles are also very tight or tense or whatever though so that explains the two kinds of soreness.

I'm very good with the stretching and exercising. The meds - not so much. Dunno why, family's here and I find myself hitting the sauce a bit and don't want to mix...they leave today so that excuse should be gone.

What's this gonna do to my workout routine? At the gym I live off squats, deads, rows, and military presses

Sorry to hear of your agonies

    Kex,

Sorry too that my sympathy is a bit belated. I've just been catching up with my thread reading.

Sounds you've had reasonable sympathy and lots of good advice. Take care of yourself and feel better soon.

Your routine at the gym will necessarily need to be adjusted, Kex, but that does not mean you have to stay away from the place (yeah, I know: "No sheep, Sherlock!"). Nevertheless, if you have an informed and educated trainer or PT (Physical Therapist), get him or her to show you exercises that will continue to keep you toned but without the strain of weight bearing. Your previous exercizing probably protected you from further or more severe injury. Again, move slowly and stay on top of the pain. And keep away from the sauce! You know better. Increase your protein intake and stay hydrated. Chances are you are more sedentary and may become somewhat constipated as a result. Increase your fibre and walk about. This will also protect your air-exchange and enhance your self-esteem which may have taken a bounce....
