I was into watches and now I have a swiss certified chronometer that I no longer like and it will cost me $300 to have it cleaned, lubricated and recalibrated. I have a Seiko 5 Automatic that keeps surprisngly good time and cost about $76 and when it starts to slow down guess what it's fate will be.

Yep. I'm a very creative person without any talent to draw or paint. I like that I can start with a totally blank cross-stitch canvas and turn it into a pretty picture. It keeps my hands busy while I watch TV so that I don't get bored. It keeps me from snacking or taking up smoking again, so I figure its good for my health. I almost never frame what I finish and I have several completed pieces just sitting in a drawer.

I used to knit too, but I haven't done that in years.

Now you know. :)

P.S. I own about a dozen watches. But the most expensive one is a $300 Bulova. The rest were under $100 each.

Nope, but I will agree with the inversely-proportional relationship between cost and quality/durability - I scuba dive too, and with the exception of my Bulova, only my Timex has actually proved itself worthy of its water resistance claims - I won a $3000 Omega a few years back at work and it didn't survive a 4 ft fall off a squat rack! :incazzato:

My wife used to do cross stitch but she used patterns for the most part. She made these Christmas ornaments with the picture on the front and the back was a solid color, you put a little stuffing inside to plump it up and sow it up. I think she did a few pictures that she framed. I'm not sure why she stopped. She goes through phases like that though where she does something for a while and move on.

As for the watch thang, I'm glad I'm not the only one with that perception. I went through a considerable number of brands and styles, and as a person with an active lifestyle I can rule out ever owning 90% of them again. Tags aren't too bad but onte whole I'd rather go with a Seiko or Gruen for the day-to-day workhorse routine.

Rolex completely blow. Breitling suck. Movado couldn't suck worse except for Omegas. Kex, I had to laugh at your observation. A few years ago, on a hot summer day not unlike this one I was at a cookout and got into one them boys-will-be-boys good natured tussles. The nexrt day when I realized my (water resistant to 300 meters) Seamaster wasn't running anymore I took it to the shop only to find that it was full of potato salad. The artisans of Switzerland...bite me.

The cheap swiss stuff is good but ol' fashioned US/Japanese stuff a la Bulova/Times seem to be more Kex proof.

I dunno what was worse about the Omega Incident, the discovery of its fragile nature, or the $400 repair bill for some elusive part grown only on the peak of Mt. Everest.

Oh, someone once asked me if I got the Omega at a rack sale at a local trucker's gas station (where I've been known to do some Christmas shopping for the in-laws)...they can't even get the Bling part right!

I loaned a friend a designer watch with the ETA 2824 25 jewel watch for an evening out. The next day he forgot to take it off when he played handball and it did not survive. I like my automatic Timex. It has a chinese movement based on an older Rolex movement. It is surpringly accurate for $85. I do have a Movado Museum quartz for dress that has held up well. Of course for as little as I dress formally it should work well on the dresser. Since my tastes change I have stopped spending large sums for watches. But if I had the money I would buy a Patek Phillipe.
