Tailfins on earlier T-Bird models were very sexy. Not to mention very comfortable. We use to own one back in late 70's and and it was a joy to ride in it. You could turn the steeirng wheel with a feather.

I been thinking about this, so I will add Jeep to list of most beautiful American cars. I like simple cars that function well, same with VW beetle :)

Yeah, the '59 Caddy was over the top -- there's never been anything quite like it since.

IMO, a candidate for ugliest American car was the Caddy's close cousin, the 1958

That really brings back memories. I was a kid at the time of course, but I thought the '55 Imperial was very elegant; the rear tail light treatment was very unusual. When the big tail fins arrived Chrysler maintained something of the high-mounted, small tail light look. This '59 Imperial was pretty impressive too ...

I own a '56 T-Bird as some of you know... I've wanted an early 50's Lowey Coupe since forever. Feanor that 2 tone Bronze Beauty you listed above... almost made me faint! You bugger! I'd add one more..

Glad you agree about the Studebaker, Worf.

I agree about the Jag XK-120, though I liked the XK-150 even more, (below) -- but of course neither are American cars. Also, the coupe was a lot sleeker than the drophead, (see both below)

These are all beautiful cars all the time. Shape is also beautiful and running is also best.

I just stumbled on this thread of a few months ago and was brought to mind of another US car that was, if not the classic beauty of the Studebaker, at least striking and ahead of its time in styling. That was the Kaiser-Fraser on the mid-'50s. The company was in sharp design at the time but I do remember seeing & admiring them on the street in my extreme youth.

My vote goes to the 1966 Ford Mustang...my neighbor owns one, and I find myself covetously admiring it at every opportunity. I wish I knew how to post pictures so you could see it for yourself. Backstory: My neighbor is the former President of the Route 66 Historical Society, former curator of the Route 66 Museum in Victorville, CA, and former editor and writer for a Route 66 Newsletter. He had been looking for a '66 Mustang for years, and finally saw a listing posted by (I swear I'm not making this up!) a Little Old Lady From Pasadena. He drove up there to look at the car, and immediately noticed the odometer. It read: 66,000 miles. Knowing that no one would believe him, he took a picture of the dashboard. I've seen it...it reads EXACTLY 66,000 miles. Dan said: "I had no choice...it was twice what I wanted to spend, BUT I HAD NO CHOICE!" That car is now the envy of all of us poker buddies, and is the most beautiful car in the neighborhood.

The earliest Mustangs were a styling revolution, (long hood, short trunk), and certainly resonated with the public. Personally I like the fastback coupe better than the convertable. I liked the rear quarter louvres though this styling cue didn't last very long ...
