Looks like bottom feeder blu players fixing to hit the market starting with Sylvania. It is on sale this week for $279 and I bet by christmas it be below $250.

This will be just the beginning of Blu Ray for everyone as cheaper players come to market, just as DVD did.

Thats not much cheaper than my Sony, really(299$)
A few years after VHS won that paticular format war they came out
with a suite of improvements (notch filter, etc) that they left off of the first players so that they could sell more players when they introduced
them, eventually they were completely integrated into the format.
Blu ray will have the same status, eventually supplanting DVD as a new and improved version of DVD.

I really think once the Chinese manufactures get involve in blu ray business, price wise the bottom is going to fall out of bluray players.

Certainly computer Blu-ray rewriter drives exist.

Looks to me like for Blu-ray playback a multimedia computer with Blu-ray ROM or rewiter drive and HDMI output is the flexible way to go. These are becoming pretty mainstream, I think.

BUT for a measley 775 $ you can get a Blu cdrom for your computer.
Beter yet a blu player for the computer is 149 bucks.

I have had a lite -on drive for my computer(must be working because the lites on and they work, mostly.
The foundation of sub 200 buck players also.

You'll need a Mobo or add-on sound card that can pass the six digital channels to an HDMI output, otherwise you'r looking at NTSC on TV and listening to analog.

That's because it's... ATI!

This is actually a rebadged Funai player. Funai is a Japanese company, and was one of the early Blu-ray licensees. They've been on board for quite a while, and I don't see the $279 price point holding up too long, since the Funai list prices were always quoted $100 lower than whatever Sony, Samsung, et al were charging.

Because of how the Blu-ray group has restricted the licenses, you won't see any true bottomfeeders like Apex and Cyberhome. The DVD Forum licensed anybody and everybody, and that opened the flood gates to all the cheaply made crap that poured in from fly-by-night Chinese manufacturers (who were the actual manufacturers of those infamous Apex DVD players).

Don't hold your breath on this one Smoke. The members of the BDA saw what the Chinese did to the DVD format, so they are keeping them at bay right now. The Chinese do not like to pay for liscensing of technology, so with DVD they generally didn't, and it gave them an advantage that forced the big guys out of that market(or at least from making a profit). At the last BDA meeting I attended, they were going to allow chinese manufacturers to make the players, but they were not about to allow them to liscense the technology because they know it will blow a hole in the floor if they do.

Pixie, the STUDIO I work for does not make bluray players, drives, or recorders. So our boots are just fine thanks. What makes our boots shake is when idiots like you make stupid comments like this

I said no such thing. What I did say is that your majors are not going to be trimming prices any time soon, and I am right about that. Everyone knew last year that Funai was going to get into the game, I said so right here on this website. I knew back then there were going to be cheaper players coming, they just weren't coming from Sony, Panasonic, Pioneer, Samsung, Denon, Marantz or any other major brand name. So next time you quote me(or better yet don't) git your story straight(which may be impossible for someone who pisses out of his ears). Oh and by the way, supply has not even come close to the demand. The majors are still having trouble keeping up with the demand, which is why their prices have remained higher.

And if you think for a second you can take that lite-on bluray drive and just plug and play, you have lost the last half a brain cell you had. You need a HD video card, a six channel audio card, quite a bit of ram, a HDMI hookup, and HDCP compliant software. That adds considerably to the cost of getting bluray drive on a computer.

Your desire to gloss over details and to oversimplify shows a profound lack of critical, or even minimal thinking.

I was at Costco today buying my new 50" Plasma and saw a Panasonic Blu-Ray player on special for $299 (model DMP-BD30K). A Samdung was on special for $279.

That is Panasonics older model that retailed for $599 when it debut, they are coming out with newer ones like the BD-50 that is a full profiled player (2.0), so this is a close out price, not its original price.

The $279 dollar samdung is the 1400, which is a profile 1.1 player which has been superceded by the 1500, and the 2500.

What you are seeing are close out prices to make way for new products, not the original prices when the players hit the streets.

So what you re saying is that we will not see same scenario of price nose dive that happened with DVD players. And it beg the question as what criteria is dictating price of blu players....market, demand or profit?

I could have added a Blu-Ray Burner to my custom laptop for $400. They were all sold out and I will be purchasing one in the near future. I was told I could send the computer in and they would swap the DVD out, or they could send me the burner and they could walk me through the installation process. I've got 4gigs ram and a 9800GT video card with 1600x1050 screen res..

Here is the USA, major tech blogs have predicted $150 Blu ray players on Black Friday (day after Thankgiving). And not to be left out, grocery store namebrand product Memorex has announced a Bluray player MVBD-2510 in November below $250 range.

The answer to your question is all three. While you will see price drops for the christmas season( just like last years), once again, after the holiday season the prices will remain at where they were before the holidays. The sales volume would have to dramatically increase for at least the majors to see the manufacturing efficiences that produces permanent lower prices. As good as Bluray has been doing, we are not quite there yet.

Consider this; when the chinese came onto the scene with their "unliscensed" players, it killed the market almost entirely as a profit making venture. Instead of having a tiered system that contained something for everyone, we had a system where the life was sucked out of the mid and upper end players, in favor of the lower end players. The DVD forum essentially killed themselves and any chance of its members making any money from DVD players. While the studios were thrilled(they sold more disc) the manufacturers were far less than happy. Since many of the members who are on the DVD forum are also members of the BDA(almost all of the manufacturers are except Toshiba), they are unwilling to let a flood of cheap chinese players decimate the market so early in its life, and while everyone is making money. This time there will be a market where there is something for everyone, whether its a cheaper funai marketed players, or mid level Sony, Panasonic, Samsung, Sharp etc., or high end Goldund(rediculously priced though), Pioneer or Cambridge Audio. They want to see this tiered system exist for quite a while.

The bottom feeders will have to wait just a little while longer(this is not a negative dig in this case)
