    Cool SOC it to me...

It slipped by some, but the FCC has given "Select Output Control to
Hollywood, which means they will control your HT forever.
Basically this is access to flags that will turn your HD on and off, and even turn
whatever you're watching off if they want.
The "reasoning" is that this will allow first run movies in your living room.
GIVE ME A BREAK, like thats gonna happen.
    GEEEZE...

And hence this is the rest of the story. Didn't CE makers announce elimination of component video outs to be hdmi only + toslink/optical ?

So... sounds like this was well in the works. I guess it might not be so bad if they were actually producing good movies with good plots & scripts. Instead of rehashing 60's and 70's films that they've never been able to do justice to with all the current tech.

Pixel, if you are going to report something, have a grasp of the technology you are reporting about. First, they cannot just turn off your set, but they can reduce the resolution. Broadcast flags for that have been around since the late 90's when digital television first appeared. The broadcast flag can only control the resolution, but not anything else.

HTCP has been around since the intro of HDMI, and it was designed to make the connection uncopyable. It is was designed so a handshake must take place between two components, so a foreign recording device could not be inserted between the component, and the display.

They will offer first run movies in the home, but it will be costly, so I think this move is largely benign. They have already stated(and has been posted here) that the analog outputs will be downrezzed to 480p after 2013, and will be no longer offered on new components after that.

Do I like what they are doing? No, but I definitely see the necessity when you have people out there who believe they can have something for nothing, while the rest of us pay for it. Their sense of free entitlement is costing us the freedoms of legally enjoying what we purchase, and its the illegal acts we should blame, not the studios. If there was no piracy, there would be no need for DRM plain and simple.

    Cool

I beleive in intellectual property rights, but I ALSO BELEIVE that once you purchase
    something its yours.
WHERES THE UTILITY in turning off my HD, downrezing it after I Have already
    paid for it?
    And this will happen.
What really makes me mad is that the "target " they claim they are aiming for,
    illegal copies, wont have flags.
This just gives them the power to take away HD from someone they decide they dont
    want to have it.
And yes they have had this capability for awhile, but now they can USE it.
    Big difference.

What you purchase may be yours, but what you do with that purchase is governed by laws. If I purchase a DVD title, I can use it to play in any disc player. I cannot burn a copy and sell(of give) it to a friend, or upload it to a bit torrent, even if it is my purchase.

    And this will happen.

What really makes me mad is that the "target " they claim they are aiming for,
    illegal copies, wont have flags.
That is because the title they are going to copy has a flag, which makes it useless to copy in the first place. A 1080p image would be down rezzed to 480p, which would make it pointless to copy in the first place. Folks could just get the DVD if it is still around. If not, just what good would a 480p disc be in a 1080p world?

Anyone can purchase a HD disc, nobody can stop them from doing that. The only thing this does is down rezz the disc when attempting to play it back from your analog outputs. It does not magically turn off your set, it does not take away the disc you purchased, and it does not just not load the disc when it is put into a player.

Your ignorance is forcing you to claim the sky is falling when all it takes is a little research before you realize it isn't. After 2013 no more components will be manufactured with analog outputs. After 2013, the Blu ray disc you put into your player will no longer support analog outputting of video, it will be down rezzed through the analog outputs. That is all this is, and nothing more.

    Get it?

    yeah SURE.
I have tried to explain to this veru dense person that I AM TALKING ABOUT TURNING OFF YOU'RE HD, not turning off the set, and he still doesnt get that is what I
    am talking about.
Like talking to a fifth grader, except that would insult fifth graders.

TRUE, but if I pay for certain capabilities I should have them.
Coming soon, a BLU disc that will play HD one time, then down-rez.
Broadcasts that will downrez for various reasons.
And other nightmares, like talkys not enough

The disc itself would be flagged and downrezzed, not your set.
Of course, and would make no difference , you still wind up watching SD

    My point exactly.
everything will have a flag sooner or later, OTA and disc.
HOLLYWOOD still misses the days when you paid to go see a movie, and you got ONE
    VIEWING for each pay.
Now you will most likely get one HD viewing for each pay, maybe one viewing only.

Anyone can purchase a HD disc, nobody can stop them from doing that. The only thing this does is down rezz the disc when attempting to play it back from your analog outputs. It does not magically turn off your set, it does not take away the disc you purchased, and it does not just not load the disc when it is put into a player.
    And who said it did?
But it will downrez your HD content to SD, and you have no control over that whatsoever

    You dont "get" it.
I was in law enforcement and precedent is everything.
Today they can cut off your HD, this is just the camels nose under the tent.
I have seen the way this "industry" operates, and anybody who has needs to
    be worried, A LOT.
