Porn giant backs Blu-ray
Adult film company Digital Playground (with sales over $12 billion last year) has announced that it will release new products on Blu-ray Disc instead of HD-DVD. The company claims that it went with Blu-ray is because of the larger storage capacity with Blu-Ray over HD-DVD.
If this trend continue, DVD-HD is going to be in trouble since according to Adult Video News estimates, consumers spent $4.3 billion on purchase or rental of adult video DVDs and videocassettes. And DVD-HD will not get a piece of that pie.

I guess size does matter.

Umm, no pun intended...
right, smokeless one?
Seriously though, I'm sure the adult industry is very interested in utilizing the expanded storage so they can really pack in the Casio soundtrack. That, and seeing Jenna Jamison in hi-def, which isn't an altogether unpleasant prospect.

I would agree with the Jenna comment, however there are probably 10 as*ses that are not nearly as perfect for each Jenna as*. As it stands, many actor and actresses are not all that thrilled with HD BECAUSE it shows off EVERY flaw. Now with regular resolution, it is not that bad. But I really don't want to see some chicks pock marks on her butt, or some dudes hairy butt in HD.
And lets be honest. If you cant get it done in the 2-3 hours that would be on HD-DVD, how much LONGER do you need a porno to be? I can see how porn is the biggest market for DVD's, but is storage capacity really that important? When is the last time you sat down and thought to yourself,
Gosh, I really hope they string this scene on a bit longer until they get to the action. If only it was in HD and 3 hours longer.

Oooooooo I'm tellin mom, You said T@A and DK online!!!!
When you are talking about uncompressed video, interactive features, multi-angle, and ooooing and aaaing in DD-HD and Dts HD, then space is VERY important. Keep in mind that DVD-HD has a set storage capacity of 50G. BluRay when taken to its ultimate capacity can be 200G on four layers. Studio's see this as room to grow.

It was porn that launched the VCR...

Seems...
...somewhat appropriate...waybackwhen, probably when most of you were mere hatchlings...video porn was referred to as "blue movies"...

If you look at length of adult videos, most of them ‘oclock in more than 2 hours (140 minutes to be exact). And with added bonuses you mentioned, length can easily exceed over 3 hours. So I am guessing that 50 gb disc might not be enough to hold 3 to 4 hours of HD material and HD DD/DTS soundtracks-not to mention commentary.
And I think you told mom because ericl showed up LOL :D

If there was ever a reason to take the leap into HD, porn is it.
Nothing like Jenna's balloon knot in all its funky glory. :D
Butt seriously, has the porn industry ever backed a technological loser?

I will conceed that porn is a driver for the industry. The internet was embraced by porn long before much else.
I like porn as much as the next guy (or gal). However, I think at least in the DVD realm there is a law of diminishing returns. Yes, porn on DVD is nice. Yes, it is clearer. Yes, it is more conveinent than a bulky VHS.
However, do we really need more storage? I guess is you are the type that wants to know the "inside scoop". To me, its not really relevent. The less I know about an actress the better. It is about the illusion of a beautiful woman doing things that I would like to have done to me. It is certainly not about listening to some woman discuss how she "got into character" or other BS I could care about.
Porn is the illusion of sex without strings. The more I know about them, the less the illusion holds up.
The point is, for mainstream movies, I AM interested in what the director was thinking about when he shot a particular scene. I DO want to know what an actor is thinking when he completes a tough scene.
I AM interested in how a set is constructed or some other technical feat is achieved.
For porn....not so much. I want some action, a little more, and that's it. The standard DVD is just fine. Besides, there is so much porn on the interent, that it's pretty much all out there for the taking now.
I'll get off my soapbox now.

The power of language is amazing in it's ability to immediately convey a concept without prior knowledge of the term!

I long gave up questioning the wisdom of the "More storage capacity is always better" philosphy. If the last 30 years has demonstrated anything it is that once you have the storage, then you will find your use for it.
I remember throughout the years discussions around questions such as "Who needs more than a 1 gig hard drive?" "Sure DVDs are great for movies, but who needs all that storage space for computing?" I remember reading an article years ago arguing that computer DVDs would be relegated to encycopedias and no other use.
Your ideas about how the porn industry could use all that extra space is being limited by how mainstream hollywood uses extra space. You have to think outside the box. Or at least Van Nuys will, and then Hollywood will follow.

I think your missing the point of my post. It's not that I don't think that the Porn industry won't think of ways to fill a disc to capacity. It's that I (personally) don't really want it. I am all for HD-DVD or Blu-Ray. Pick your poison. I want Hollywood to fill the disks up. Show me all the behind stuff, cast interviews, games, tech feats, special affects demos, the whole ball of wax.
For porn? Not so much. Thats the point. I WATCH porn. I don't want to get the "behind" the scenes view. Frankly, I don't care what the actress had for breakfast. I couldn't care less what the director was thinking during a scene (...ok, now we need LOUDER MOANS...no, no, keep the heels on, all high class working girls wear them to bed :) )
Thats the difference.
I never implied that we wont use the space, its just that I don't think that Porn will be the driving factor behind the success of HD movies, be it blu-ray or HD-DVD. If anything, people will use it less for porn. Surf the internet. There is bootleg porn everywhere. (as well as bootleg movies...keep reading) The difference between bootleg porn and bootleg movies is length. Unless you can get what you need from a major movie in anywhere from 30 sec to 5 min or so. The new wave of security on Blu-Ray and HD-DVD will be great for the studios, but not for bootleggers. There is where I see the weakness.
Just a thought. Good discussion.
