    Cedia Expo!!

    Hey Gang,

Next weekend I will be heading out to the CEDIA EXPO in Indianapolis. Photo-John, the administrator of PhotographyREVIEW.com will be with me armed with one of his nice digital cameras and we'll be snapping shots left and right. I wanted to give you guys the chance to tell me what you'd like to see. I'll try and get John to get some cool pics, and if you have any questions of manufacturers I'll see if I can't get a couple interviews!

We'll also be getting a feed of AudioHolics coverage - they're going to have 5-6 guys covering the show. So we should be able to give you all a pretty good glimpse of the show!

    -Eric

    Eric In Action

Here's Eric, getting the job done at his first trade show. I think he's got his priorities straight. He actually ignored these girls. He was too busy tripping over his shoelaces staring at all the sweet gear. As far as real work goes, he talked to lots of manufacturers and made sure everyone knows he intends AudioREVIEW.com to take a more active part in the serious hi-fi and home theater community.

I've starter uploading general coverage photos to the new gallery. I'll continue to post more over the next few days. I'll do the best I can with descriptions. But Eric will have to post the real specs. I'm only the photographer...

    Back from Indy!

So I arrived back from Indianapolis late last night. I was quite an enjoyable show, and I must say that Indianapolis is a very nice town. The big city I am used to is San Francisco, with its ridiculous hills, crooked streets, nightmare traffic and urine scented sidewalks. Indianapolis, by comparison was quite refreshing. Flat and spacious roads, beautiful old buildings oragnized neatly into these things called "blocks". People were very nice, which can't always be said about locals when boatloads of conventioneers come into town.

We flew in Thursday night, with a stop in Chicago. The NFL's opening game was on, the New England Patriots vs the Indianapolis Colts. I thought this was cool as we were about to fly into Indy, and the show was being held at the Colts home field - the RCA Dome. To say that Peyton Manning (the Colts' star QB for non football freaks) was a popular figure there would be quite an understatement. He must have been on the cover of just about every magazine and newspaper I saw there.

CEDIA stands for "Custom Electronic Design and Installation Association" so obviously, the focus is on custom home installations for contractors and dealers. Dealers and contractors are the most popular So while most of the focus is on audio and home theater, you also saw central vacuums, home networking and lighting companies showing off their wares.

In terms of a/v products on display, here's what seems to be popular or new:

  112. Plasma Displays.
Every company and their mother are making these now, including dozens of new little companies I've never heard of. There were a lot of really gorgeous displays, but because they are such a new technology, I have trouble trusting them. If I were to spend big bucks on a display, I would have to go with a projector.

  113. Inwall Speakers.
Audiophile speaker companies are really getting into these. The rep for PSB speakers was saying that while they'll continue to produce box speakers, their main focus in terms of R & D and sales will be on inwall speakers. We heard some really fantastic sounding examples from companies like Thiel and Cabasse. We'll get some pics up later.

  114. Networked Audio.
The integration of the computer/home network and the stereo continues, in a couple ways. All the big manufacturers seem to have some kind of device for wirelessly streaming audio from your computer to your stereo. I also saw a few wireless ampilifiers and surround speakers. You hook up your pre-amp out or surround speaker out to a wireless transmitter, which then broadcasts the signal to a reciever (a signal receiver, not an av receiver) hooked up to an amplifier, then to your speakers. This saves the hassle of wiring your surround speakers.

As you've already seen, Photo-John takes great pictures, and we've got a LOT more to post. Problem is, they're stuck on his computer and he is currently in transit, and won't be in the office til tuesday. So we'll get more photos at that time.

Every show has that "Killer" display, the one that really knocked your socks off. Was it the HUGE plasmas? The in-wall speakers.....the central vacuums?

I was going to mention this a little later, but we also attended the "T.H.E. Show" that was held a couple blocks away from the CEDIA show. This was a much smaller show with about five demo rooms. Its much better suited to demostration rooms, as CEDIA is in a huge and extremely noisy convention floor - and for this reason most audio exhibitors didn't even bother actually hooking up their equipment. IN terms of video, Sony's displays were awesome.. everything they had was great. you would just sit there mesmerized by whatever they were playing.. At one point I caught myself staring at glasses of mixed drinks sitting on a table!

At T.H.E., however, they had great audio demo rooms. The Cabasse/Bel Canto room was absolutely amazing. They were playing some fantastic organ music, and the bass was so deep, powerful and tuneful that it sounded the organ was right in the room with us. My body vibrated along with each bass note. I couldn't get enough. The Vandersteen/Audio Research setup almost made me cry with when they played a live version of Roger Gilmour playing a track from "The Division Bell". Afterwards we chatted with Richard Vandersteen for a while, who I consider a hometown guy because he is based a few miles away from my hometown. So it was fun to meet him and tell some jokes and talk about audio. He gave us some good advice about upgrades, saying that people should make a long term plan about what they want out of their stereo in 10 years, and then slowly upgrade accordingly over the years, instead of upgrading all at once for he called "another level of mediocrity".

    Love and Lust

yes, its a gorgeous amplifier. There were so many pieces like that it just killed me. Everytime I saw something I would start doing calculations about how I could get that piece, only to see the next exhibit, and start the whole process over again.

It's kind of like when you go an event/place with countless gorgeous women. So many gorgeous women out there, you think to yourself, there must some way I can get one of them, but alas, i have invested all this time, energy, and money into the humble system/girlfriend i have now.

Don't get me wrong, I love my girlfriend/stereo but ah, the beautiful girls/equipment out there!!

    -ERic

    PS
If my girlfriend ever sees this thread, I am so screwed.
