    New Technology Aims to Curb DVD Piracy

    "Macrovision Corp. today unveiled a technology that the Silicon Valley firm claims can block 97% of the DVD-copying software that pirates use, without interfering with a DVD's playability or picture quality."

    "Macrovision RipGuard DVD is designed to dramatically reduce DVD ripping," Steve Weinstein, head of the company's entertainment technologies unit, said in a statement today."

    I hope this works better than their VHS copy protection which rendered many tapes unplayable on many machines. Mainly, I think that this is another scare such as, VHS/Beta recordable tapes will bankrupt the movie industry, or the cassette will bankrupt the music industry, etc. etc.

    The macrovision people were very guarded about just about everything when I tried to talk to them at NAB a few years ago. It was interesting because every other booth is filled with people dying to talk to anyone who might want to use something they have. At macrovision they were kind of like "I want to see some credentials before I say anything to you".
