Directv 3D Rollout Begins: Interesting Info

On May 20th, Directv started uploading the software update that enables their HD receivers for 3D. When completed, all of Directv's MPEG-4 receivers will be 3D-ready (except the early model HR20). The Satelliteguys website has posted some of Directv's presentation slides, and it has some interesting bullet points about how the 3D feature will get implemented.

    http://www.satelliteguys.us/directv-...irectv-3d.html

    - Directv does not require HDMI 1.4
    - ESPN 3D goes live on June 11 with the World Cup
    - N3D, PPV, and On Demand 3D channels go live this month
    - Initial launch will only support TVs with "seamless" handshake via HDMI
    - 4 Panasonic models, 15 Samsung models, and 1 Mitsubishi model currently support seamless integration
    - Screen will display in 2D when on-screen menus are displayed
    - Composite/component analog outputs are disabled with 3D playback, HDMI is required
    - HDMI cable must be directly connected from the satellite receiver to the TV; the 3D signal will not pass through a HDMI switch
    - Directv's specific 3D packets might not get passed even with some 2010 "3D ready" AV receivers
    - The 3D feature is also getting deployed in Directv's Whole Home satellite receivers

Obviously, this is the early early adopter phase, and it looks like the implementation is far from complete (particularly with the 3D feature not compatible with HDMI switches, at least from Directv receivers).

But, 3D channels are firing up this month and most Directv HD subscribers will be good to go well before the World Cup starts up.

I have a Panasonic 55ST30 plasma and the 3D picture from Directv is pretty good but not Avatar 3D quality.
