I wait with baited breath to hear your experience of watching IMAX 3D. Regular IMAX was impressive for me.

Since you're bragging, I presume you'll go at least once to experience the 3D. I haven't had an opportunity to see 3D yet in any setting, IMAX or in the home.

The IMAX theaters are impressive, but the OmniMAX theaters are on a whole different

level.

They have one in, I believe in France where the floor opens to a screen underneath. The

downside is they make some people queazy.

I've been to several, Dallas/Fortworth, Las Vegas, St Louis, Chicago and several IMAX.

Great experience, but can be a bit pricey.

I have experienced 3D before, in spite of what talky says.
THE MAIN EXPENSE for this one will be the screen, in spite of building it in the theaters
largest venue(its a 16 screen theater).
Really looking forward to it!

Don't get too excited. This is obviously one of IMAX's new multiplex retrofits, which use short screens and inferior 2k digital projection. It's a far cry from the dedicated installations with the 100 foot screens and 15-perf/70mm film projection. The diagram below compares the two IMAX screens in Manhattan -- one of them a 15/70 IMAX screen, and the other one a multiplex IMAX installation.



Unfortunately, these IMAX lite screens charge the same ticket prices as the larger IMAX auditoriums. If you want to go IMAX, go for the real thing. The map below shows the IMAX locations, and what format they use.

Right now there's no first run 3D movies that were shot in the 70mm Imax format, and no 3D 70mm Imax projectors so this is a non-starter. 3D Imax is a totally different animal than the original Imax format.

The first IMAX 3D film I saw was years ago in Chattanooga at a 15/70 theatre. It was "Into the Deep" about the undersea life around kelp forests off the coast of Florida. It was a completely different sort of perspective than standard IMAX films. Where the image of most of them seems huge and distant, the 3D flavor brings the focus right in front of your face. I remember watching kids reaching out for fish that appeared to be only a few feet away from your grasp.

Sure its I-max lite, a real one would be a different animal entirely.
Working in a store once, I asked a painter why he bought a bottle of red dagger
every morning. He said it was better than nothing.
Any improvement in the experience is better than nothing.

Huh? Where are you getting this information? I saw Avatar in 3D at a 15/70 IMAX theater using 15/70 film prints and linear polarization. IMAX has been used in 3D presentations for well over two decades - digital projection is not a necessity.

The biggest issue (among many) with the newer digital installations is the low 2k resolution projection that they use.

We saw Avatar in 3D at the Imax in Raleigh. The 3D was spectacular! Like nothing I'd ever seen before. We saw Fantasia 2000 at the OmniMax in Richmond, Virginia. It was good, but I liked Avatar in 3D better. The OmniMax seats are more comfortable. They lean back, so you're actually looking up more than in an Imax. Easy to fall asleep in.........

I FELL asleep watching AVATAR just fine without it being in 3D.

The OmniMax is cool ... if you got a seat in one of the two back rows! At least with Hollywood feature films, OmniMax is a beyotch to follow if you're off to the side or near the front of the theater (I saw Batman Begins on an OmniMax screen and I had a really hard time following he action). I recall that it works better with IMAX originals that use the full 15/70 film image area.
