I am a big fan of the 3D movies and try not to miss them when they come out. Its a joy to watch on the big cinema screen and the loud rumbling sound is something my 2 subs at home and my god fearing neighbors could possibly tolerate !!! So, until I win the lotto, my home theater will have a modest sized 42inch TV ( the Philips 21:9 cinema TV with passive 3D being the next possible upgrade.... ) and my Final Sound Electrostatic Loudspeakers keep me happy ( the new Martin Logan 5.1 surround sound package TPV 109 Electromotion Loudspeakers OR the Magnepan on the wall surround pack will be on my wish list to audition ). That does NOT mean that the people living close by sleep easy when I decide to watch an action movie late at night!!!
It is clear in my mind that 3D is for occasional use, indulgence being the preferred term. I most certainly do NOT want to watch the news in 3D nor the soap operas for that matter. Porn ? Why not ? My motto is look first complain later! The leading cable TV company in Portugal has ( or had ) 8 games of NBA programmed for 3D viewing and Basketball is by no means the topic of conversation in Portugal. Hopefully other sports and events will follow soon. Even the movies themselves need to have that extra flavor in terms of content, story and action unfolding on a big scale to make them appealing.
I would guess that a quarter of the TVs on sale already are 3D ready and the trend being that soon all TVs will be " born" that way so whether you like it or not you will have the technology in your humble home. Its use will be optional....
The active 3D glasses seem to be getting better all the time and IMHO are the better choice because I noticed that with passive 3D glasses I would have to move FURTHER away from the TV. Its as if the pixels were to big for a given distance compared to active glasses.
Anyway that's my take and one can either chew it or spit it out!!

Home 3D tv's I always felt they never had what it took to make it. I think judging the sales out there.... I was right.

Do you have sales statistics to go by, or are you just going with your gut?
