    DVD player with upconversion capability

I was doing my weekly browsing at a local electronics shop and noticed a dvd player (Toshiba) that supposedly upconverts DVD signal to near HD compatible scan rate. Does this DVD player truly improves DVDs to HD like picture? (I do have a HD ready TV) Doesn't the DVD itself has to be recorded in HD caliber in the first place(720 or 1080 whateva..)? I'm confused and wondering if this is worth the investment... Thanks!!

Yeh, you are right, the DVD need to be recorded in HD for true HD. Those DVD player just scale up the image (no different from those digital zoom stuff in camera or camcorder). Depends on your TV's internal scaler, these players may or may not offer any better images.
