When is Best Time To Buy A New HD TV on sale?

I have no aversion to buying say a 2004 HD LCD TV new if I buy it at a substantial savings over a comparable new model. My question is, for the biggest savings, when between now and the first week in January, can you find the biggest sales bargain on TV's at Chain Stores
(Best Buy, Circuit City, online places. etc) as I don't want to buy anything now if I can get it alot cheaper at a known time in the future?

I went to Good Guys yesterday in LA as Paul on this board got a $1,000 sub for $500 but for me was extremely dissapointed on the pricing as I saw nothing along those lines in regards to TV's. As several people said who were around at the same time, the stuff presently being marked down is available at similar prices at the chain stores. Maybe in a few months this will change but as of yesterday I didn't see any steals.

The thing is I took an early retirement & can manage OK on a fixed income- thank god I don't have kids or I couldn't have afforded to retire & if its a matter of waiting 2 months to save $400
on an item I'm not urgent for like a 34" HDTV to replace my 30"HDTV, I'll wait. Its better then working!

Check for sales on the day after Thanksgiving. CC & BB will both be running big sales. But you have to know what you want, and where they keep it before you go in. You won't have enough time to hit both as all the best sale items go in the first few minutes. Watch the adds, pick out the deal you want, then go there a day or two before hand to get an idea of how the store is laid out. Show up at 5AM or earlier as there will already be a line. Be prepaired for a lot of pushing and shoving. It's a pain in the ars but it's the price we pay for getting the deal.
The last time I did this was a few years ago. I got there at 4:55 am. I had to park across the street because the parking lot was full. The line was around the building. There was a huge wall of TV's stacked up by the doors. (They opened at 5) By time I got in they were all gone. I was able to get one of the last ones in storage in the back. But I did end up getting a 32 inch TV for $199.95.

EG- Why the change? The 30" too small? Just wondering. I'm still not into the HD world, but I'm thinking about it more and more.

I stay far away from BB/CC the day after Thanksgiving- the line was about 400 people long- it's a madhouse. I went there later in the day and they still had some items (not the dirt cheap stuff- just as GM said, they go really fast), but still needed to wait over an hour in line- for me, not worth the $50 savings for me- if I would save $200+, then I can deal with the wait.

And "mad house" is really an understatement. It looks like a war zone without the blood. If you do it, be ready for that. Nothing more disturbing than seeing too old ladies fighting over the last TV on the floor.

Actually the 30" Samsung HD is very good especially at its price which was about $700 on sale new with delivery a year ago but everytime I compare it to my 48" Mitsubishi Picture, there's a night & day difference, perhaps psychologically due to the size. That's why I want to go bigger. I'm also leaning to an LCD one based on my window shopping at Circuit City where I saw a Poloroid HD LCD (I didn't even know they made TV's) picture compared to the regular CRT pictures & it was so much better.

I would recommend HD to anyone especially a big screen one

Poloroid doesn't. This once proud company now leases its name to any fly by night company that wants a recognizable name on its product.

I know everyone on this board says don't buy TV's from companys you never heard of but all I can say is the picture on the Poloroid HD LCD I saw was surprisingly great.

The companies offering these "no name" LCDs are usually involved in the computer industry and experienced to some extent with LCDs, which go back a long way as computer monitors. The immediate picture that you see may not look bad at all. Problems might arise with scaling/deinterlacing and gradations of color and/or black and white that demand skillful execution and fairly expensive chips. Spend a solid half-hour or so throwing various kinds of material at the Polaroid in your typical viewing light. If it's still standing at the end, and you can live with what you saw, you may have a bargain.

I'd be remiss if I didn't add what you already know. A lot of a TV's personality happens behind the scenes. You can't see how this thing is put together on the inside, but you can get some indication from how it's put together on the outside. Check the input-output suite. Is it up to date? Does it have everything you need? Does it feel like it will hold together? Is the spacing adequate? It's really hard to track some of these companies down if you have a problem that the store can't or won't handle. Risk in these situations is unavoidable. Affordability counts in that area as much as it does in price up front.

Your probably right & its too expensive to risk it but the picture on it was sure nice. It looks like I'll be playing it safe with a brand name.

I have read in several sources that for alot of electronics items the best time to buy is late winter/early spring. President Day sales often offer good deals. It is post-Christmas/pre Income tax and often a transition time between new/old models. A week or two before the Super Bowl also has some occasional finds as dealers try to get people to buy a new TV for the "big game".

My advice is to figure out what it is you want to buy and watch the ads over a 2-3 month period. Most of your big chains run their ads in cycles and you can get a feel for the range of your item and know when it is really being offered at the lowest price.

Also don't be afraid to negotiate or even get someone at the store to give you a committment on the sale price even after the sale ends. I did that last year with my Sony HD. Went to BB on the last day of the sale told the salesman I was not sure it was what I was looking for and I got him to honor the sales price for the next day.(in writting BTW) Waited a couple of days and went in and got for the sales price. In the mean time I got a 10% off coupon in the mail because BB sends them out to Reward Zone members during times when their are no upcoming "holiday" sales events. Before they even deliver the TV I go in with the coupon and ask for the additional 10% off which they agree to honor and then to top it off the girl at the counter takes the 10% off of the current price not the sales price I paid so I get about another 5% off there as well. Saved about $500 off the original price.

Post Christmas "open box" items are sometimes a good deal (the first/second weekend after X-Mas is prime time) and again I have negotiated on them as well it just depends how many of them the store got returned. If you are really patient I notice that Wal-Mart and Sam's Club have pretty good deals on models a year or two past when the item was out in the mainstream stores. They don't ever go on sale but their prices are lower than sale prices than when the model was current.

    Good Hunting!

    The Kid is the Man

I salute you You got those people at Best Buy to do something for you & in writing no less.
While the LA Woodland Hills store isn't that terrible my experience with Best Buy when I lived in the East was horrible- no one there knew what the hell was going on & it took forever to purchase an item. You the man!

    Thanks for the props.

I think it helps that there is literally a Circuit City across the street from the BB so when you threaten to go elsewhere you can just look out the window.....

I also forgot to add that because of the cost of the TV and what I got the kids for X-mas I was later able to get a Sharp 25" TV for the bedroom for about $70 using Reward Zone coupons. I am not shilling for BB but my kids get a lot of CD's and Video games from them so I use their program a lot. I think CC offers something similar and perhaps a retailer out your way does as well. Joining one of these programs may be something to consider (if it makes sense based on your shopping habits) in order to lower the cost of the TV you are looking to buy.

Hey are you in LA? Reason I ask is there literally is a Circuit City across the street from Best Buy here in Woodland Hills. Will definite be heeding your advice. I actually get most of my electronics stuff from Circuit City as they seem to have the best prices on sale for things I'm looking for.

I often see "brand new still in box" listed in the local paper classified TV/Stereo section. Either someone who went over budget or perhaps the actual path from manufacturer to owner got somehow deflected .

Likewise there is a site called "videogon" where I ocassionally see brand new stuff being dumped by pretending it's used.

Both of these will be for cash and only the quick will benefit. You need to know exactly what you're looking at to prevent being scammed. (Know your model numbers).

I have bough reputable manufactures brand new stuff in original shrink wrap packaging "used" on some sites.

To take advantage of this kind of sale you need to dedicate some real time to the hunt. Scan at least daily. Good hunting.

Never pay the asking price! I live in Orange County Ca. I have a Best Buy, Ken Cranes and Howards Appliance store near me. As well as CC and GG.

I just looked at the Panasonic 42" TH42PX50U plasma. It received a good review in the new Sound and Vision magazine on newsstands now. It's marked at $2,998 at all stores. I just ask them all for their lowest price because I'm going to the next shop and see if they will match yours.

Well, Ken Cranes tells me $2,798 is their lowest. Then $200 for the wall bracket to hang it. I didn't ask BB but Howards told me $2,595 was their lowest price and $140 for the wall bracket. I'm saving serious $ already!

I am on the other coast but it looks like you can play them off each other from time to time. CVC is right on target. Negotiate-Negotiate. They can only tell you no but if your timing is right and the store is having trouble moving product then sometimes you get lucky. they are usually more willing to negotiate on the close out equipment.

What kind of tv do you have currently? I bought one about two years ago that only has 480i, 480p and 1080i and was wanting a new dlp with 720p but I am forcing myself to wait until the 1080P is available as a standard. I do think in this field waiting is excruiciating but very much worth it in the end.
