24/192 Receiver DAC Versus 24/96 DAC

Assuming I'm using the same speakers & CD or DVD player & optic cables, am I going to notice little or no improvement, moderate improvement or significant improvement in CD & DVD audio quality, if I go to a receiver with a 24/192 DAC versus my current 24/96 DAC, assuming I stick to the same Denon Receiver Brand?

Since i can switch between sampling rates in real time on my big Tact, i can asure you that on a good dac (dont know the denon) and with the right implementation the difference is not subtle!

Nope, i only care about technology that interest me and about products that i actually own, or owned in the past.

Round and round it goes, the upgrade cycle (and the accompanying questions) never stops...

Considering that you've yet to calibrate your system with a setup disc and SPL meter, address room acoustical issues, or consider speaker upgrades, the DAC sampling rate in your case will probably make no difference whatsoever unless you plan on using an iLink or HDMI 1.1 connection for DVD-A and SACD. Even between 192/24 DACs, the signal output will vary, so you cannot make assumptions about sound quality improvements based on the sampling rate alone.

Besides, when you change receivers, you have NO WAY OF KNOWING whether any perceived sound quality improvements are due to the DAC sampling rate or other factors. The more relevant question would simply be which receiver would give you the biggest sound quality improvement over what you're currently using, but you seem more interested in spinning theoretical questions that can't be answered given how many other causal variables are in play.

Just because a DAC is 24/192 does not mean it will process 24/96 signals or lower (bit/sampling rates) any better than a 24/96 DAC, just because 192 is higher than 96. Often these DAC manufacturers don't revisit "older technology" and re-invent the wheel, they just add to it. The 24/192 DAC will play formats that are made with 24-bit/192 KHz sampling rate data. The 24 bit/96 KHz DAC maxes out at 96 KHz. A CD which only has 44.1 KHz samling rate isn't going to make use of either of those big numbers....and to be honest, not many DVD's use 192 or 96 that I'm aware of (though I could be wrong on that).

Whether the DAC's sound quality is better or not is anyone's guess.

And since most microphones used for recording rarely have above a 16 or 18 bit resolution capability, it really is a mute arguement.
