Video Camcorder with Mic Split?

If I bought a video camcorder with a mic input for an external microphone, and I wanted to attach a mic spilitter to the camcorder's mic input can I then insert a shotgun mic into the mic splitter input as well as a hand held mic into the other port on the mic splitter device using both to conduct an interview with someone?

Or would this not work at all? I have seen interviews with some would use 2 microphones while others would just use the one OR use the hand held mic and then have an attached mic to the person's shirt.

Please help!
