    My sister is looking into getting a large 52 LCD screen leaning towards the Sony line. Can someone explain the difference if their is one between the two models?

    Welcome to the looney bin, populated mostly by psychotic 12 year olds.
    Not quite sure, but I would guess that one is 120 hz and the other aint.
    Or one might be 720p and the other 1080p.
    there are so many models out these days I dont keep up, all of the space in my brain I use to use for model numbers is now used for storing porn.
    Go to Sony.com and read up, download some PDF owners manuels.
    And good luck, and welcome

    i just bought the xbr4... they are almost identical in features. the only diffrences that i could seem to come up with was;
    xbr5 has a piano black finish...
    xbr5 cost couple hundred more...

    they both have the important features like 1080p and motioflow
    EDIT;

    my advice save your money and go with the xbr4

    The only thing I heard was that there was a cosmentic difference between the two models. My brother's friend bought two XBR5s on Black Friday. He said they are the best things money can buy if you have the money to buy them. His friend also bought two Sony 300 Blue Ray players and watched Spiderman 3 on one of the sets and said the picture quality was incredible on the XBR5..

    The differences between the two are minor. Performing a comparison on the Sony site determined the only differences are the XBR5 has RS232 communication for home automation interaction and it also has an 18 month warranty instead of 12 on the XBR4. To me a better warranty means better components. I purchased my KDL52XBR5 through our Sony Family Center before Christmas for $2500, they also offered the 5yr extended warranty for $149. It looks and performs great. BTW you can purchase different colored bezels, but black laquer is standard. I believe other colors are available at purchase, but changing after purchase will cost $139.

    Xbr4 & Xbr5

    The Sony XBR5 has many more differences rather than just cosmetic. You are paying for additional technology as well. Both are running on the BRAVIA Engine. The XBR4 uses the BRAVIA Engine EX Full Digital Video Processing System. While the XBR5 uses the slightly better BRAVIA Engine PRO HD Video Processor. The XBR5 also has what is called the Live Color Creation System featuring WCG-CCFL backlight. Speakers on the XBR5 use S-force Front Surround and it has a much higher contrast ratio of 18,000:1 compared to 8,000:1 on the XBR4 among other things. Hope that helps.

    There is not much difference in the picture or sound between the 2 when seen side by side and certainly not for the extra $1,000 to $1500 more for the XBR5. Thats why Sony is offering a better warranty, not because of higher quality electronics. I compared them side by side and and talked to several knowlegeable sleasemen, oops, I meant salesmen.
    I could afford the XBR5 but went with the XBR4 because I could tell no difference. By the way, the sound on the 52" XBR4 is fantastick.

    According to the Sony website, and everything else I've ever read about these two models, your statements are inaccurate. They're technically identical with the exception of the RS232 port and beyond their technical differences they have only a different appearance. They both use the same BRAVIA Engine, the same contrast ratio, same back light, same speakers, etc. etc.
