I have a budget ot $2500 for sound on a home theater. Any ideas?

You can get good front speakers for around $350, like Paradigm Mini-Monitor.
Matching center, $300, Paradigm CC-370.
Good rears for around $200, Paradigm Atom.
Good subwoofer, $600. HSU, SVS, Paradigm, DefTech.
Use the rest on the best reciever you can get for the price!

No, THX is meaningless. All it means is you paid for that sticker to be on there.

yhea, avoid THX. a lot of manufacturers can surpass the THX standards, but the testing and everything costs an arm and a leg and like Abstentia said, for all intesive purposes you are buying a really expensive sticker. Good example is a lot of Monster cables. They don't SAY thx but would sure as heck pass it. The Monster THX line is way more expensive than the non THX line, but no better. Not sure where you are buying or what you need, but I'm partial to the sound of Energy myself, but I'm just getting into the high end lines, so Energy is as high as i've gotten so far. A Denon AVR2105, Energy C5 floor standers, C3 rears and a CC1 centre for 5.1, just toss a pair of C3's for 7.1 . Any retailer should be able to fit you into the $2500 dollar range for all that, this stuf has enough mark-up. as for a sub, its all up to you. The energy S8.3 or 10.3's are good, as would be a low end Velodyne, but you'll pay a premuim for the name ~_~ . Give it a look, usually good stuff.

2) HT only or will this system double as a 2-channel rig?
3) What type of movies and music?

Need more info. Room size? Limitations on size of components? Need a TV? Need a DVD player? Planning to play multichannel music, or just movies? All speakers at once, or just the mains and add the rest later?

Lots of possibilities that you need to narrow down before we can help.

As the others have said, don't worry about THX or non-THX. There are plenty of decent companies that do not participate in the THX program.
