    Now that the dust is settling...
    ...and blu-ray seems to be The Last H.D. Format Standing, I'm thinking about leaping into the high-def arena. My question is this: since my vintage Hitachi rear projection t.v. has a native resolution of 480p, and is only capable of 1080i, would I even notice a difference? Would blu-ray discs play at 1080i, or would they default to 480p? Would there be any noticeable improvement in standard dvds? Or, do I have to bite the bullet and pony up for a new television?

    Any and all comments would be appreciated.

    P.S. The Hitachi has only component and DVI connections. Will this be compatable with a blu-ray player?

    yes you will see a big difference from 480p at 1080i
    You will need to look for a player that has selectable output resolutions.
    Not all Blu-Ray players do this.
    There may be many more to choose from but here are a couple that does 1080i too.

    Both HDMI & DVI are essentially digital, which means you can simply get an adaptor.

    But he will still need a player that does 1080i too.
    My old set had DVI 1080i
    I bought the cable that has DVI and HDMI connections
    my Samsung BD-UP5000 duo player which has selectable outputs (one of many reasons I bought it)
    Anyway tried the output set to 1808p just to see what happens well... the screen just goes black because it will not support that input so obviously so I had to set it back to 1080i for it to work.
    but then like one month later I decided I must have a new set that does 1080p/24fps.

    Nice tv. But I have to say i'm not in love with the audio side.
    How exactly does rear-projection work? is it conventional cathode (albeit HD)?
