OK, here's my shot at it with all components brand new from authorized dealers:

From the 5.1 Ascend + SVS Speaker Combo Advisor at PlasmaDocs, configure a system which includes five Ascend Acoustics CBM-170 speakers and one SVS PB10-ISD subwoofer. This combo cost $1179 plus shipping. For a receiver, get the Yamaha HTR-5760 for $379.88 with free shipping from J&R. Even after shipping on the speakers, your friend should have money left over for cables.

    Here's the mix

Great info guys!! Here's the mix I am thinking:
    Sub-woofer $ 500.00 (HSU, SVS, OUTLAW)
    Reciever $ 399.00
    Speakers $750.00
    Cables $ 50.00

He already has the DVD player hooked up to his TV.
So all the cable wer'e gonna need is speaker wire and
    one coax for DD.

For speaker wire, I recommend Sound King 12 gauge wire with NXG dual banana plugs on each end. These dual banana plugs are a perfect fit for both the Yamaha receiver and the Ascend Acoustics speakers. For cables, I recommend the basic (all blue) models from NXG such as this one and this one. I would also suggest that you sketch out how you will be wiring everything together so that you don't forget to order or buy all of the necessary cables. The online cable dealers have good prices but a fairly high minimum shipping charge so that it is cheapest to order everything all at once. You can also buy NXG cables and connectors on eBay and at Let's Go Digital.
