    Multi Ch Input?

Hello! I'm fairly new to the 5.1 HT world and have a couple questions about my set-up. I have a Yamaha 5760 powering a mix of Mirage and Def Tech speakers. Whenever I watch movies, I select the 5.1 Dolby Digital or DTS option on the DVD and everything is good!

When browsing through my receiver manual, I came across, "Connecting to the MUTLI CH INPUT jacks" section. It talks about how the receiver is equipped with 8 additional input jack for discrete multi-channel input from a multi-format player, external decoder, sound processor, or pre-amp.

    Here are my questions-

*What is the difference between MULTI CH INPUT and just selecting DD or DTS through the DVD options?
*Should I be using the MULTI CH INPUT option?
*Is a multi-format player, my DVD player (since I know I don't have the others)?
*What type of wiring is required for this?

    Thanks a bunch!
    Eric

This would allow you to use the DD/DTS DACs in your DVD, SACD. DVD-Audio player in lieu of those in your receiver by using six analog cables instead of one digital interconnect.

For DD/DTS DVD players, even if your DVD had the ability to provide these outputs (most don't) it's debatable wether or not you would hear an improvement.

Where these would be necessary is if you used a SACD or DVD-Audio player as I can'tthink of any current receivers that do this decoding. These MUST be done in the player and transferred to your receiver via six analog cables.

Thanks for the fast response, markw! So, the MULTI CH INPUT option is primarily used for SACD and DVD-A, not for watching DVD movies?

Basicaly true. Since all modern receivers contain DACs that will more than do justice to DD/DTS soundtracks, having a DVD only player that can do this is redundant and a waste of money, IMNSHO.

    Hey all,

I have a question in regard to the multi Ch input.

In regard to the cables needed to hook up a Universal DVD/CD/SACD/DVD-A player to a receiver. Both the player and the receiver have the multi-channel outputs/inputs.

Do I have to use something like the Monster SACD/DVD-A Cable pack:

Or can I just buy two of the RCA 3 cable bundles like this:

    http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showd...number=181-662

If I could just go with the two RCA bundles...that would save me around $120!!!

What am I missing? Do I have to use the "Special" SACD/DVD-A cables? Or are those SACD packs just 6 regular RCA cables bundled together???

    Thanks!!

They are just 6 regular RCA cables bundled together. Do not buy the monster product, as it is just a overpriced bunch of cables that are not going to give you any added benefit.
