Size Difference between a 4:3 27" TV & a Widescreen HD TV

Can anyone please give me some general info on this. I had a 27" Normal TV which was more then big enough for viewing in my bedroom. I upgraded this to a 30" widescreen HDTV which was very good but somehow the widescreen picture looked smaller on this then the non HD picture on the non widescreen 27" Set. Is this my imagination. As a result I just bought a 34"
widescreen HDTV. Is there a general rule in size in converting equivilents, i.e, a 27" normal TV is the equivilent or I'm guessing a 32" widescreen? I'm pretty sure you can't replace a normal size TV with a widescreen TV of the same size and actually have the same size viewing screen.

What would the Widescreen HDTV size equivilent be to a regular 27" TV? Conversely my new 34" Widescreen HDTV would be the equivilent of what size on a regular TV? Thanks

I would think that would depend on the aspect ratio of the program you're watching. Because of the letterboxing required to show a 16:9 movie on an 'old obsolete' square TV, a 36" standard TV would show an image somewhere in the neighborhood equivalent to a 30" HDTV. That's just a guess..I don't know. Could be smaller or bigger.

Now I'm totally confused. This is the opposite of what Cam said. To make this easier, lets assume I'm watching a 16:9 TV show on a 4:3 TV and say that TV is 27". How big would my HD Widescreen have to be to cover the eqivilent of the screen on the 4:3 TV screen for that show? Conversely, I'm watching a 16:9 TV show on my 34" HD widescreen TV. How big a screen does a 4:3 TV have to be to cover that same size?

16:9 on a 32" 4:3 TV = 29.4"
4:3 on a 34" 16:9 TV = 27.8"
16:9 on a 36" 4:3 TV = 33"
