Best 4 grand you could spend.

    Hypothetical situation:

You are given 4 grand to buy one piece, any one singular piece for a brand new home theater. Your situation for adding components later is unknown, however you are expected to get the absolute most towards the system completion with this one piece that you can.

Which one item, of all the items available would you buy as a base starting point towards a HTS with a budget of 4grand.

(need not be MSRP, shipping not factored into your 4 grand, component age not an issue)

I'll bite. For home theater, without question the best HDTV projector and screen that kind of money can buy. Got no idea of which brand or model...don't have $4K to blow on one just now so I haven't needed to look into it.

Just out of curiosity, how much would you then spend on 9 speakers and a sub to go with that monster of a receiver?

well on a sub i would go with a Supercube or a Velodyne referance.. on speakers, if available, i would go with martin logan aerius fronts, a cinema i and montage rears.. so a total of about 7 grand on the speaker setup. (market prices)...

Wouldnt actually put up a 9.1, would dedicate the remaining channels for use as seperate zones... have a pool zone, a whole house zone, and a game room zone :P

Really big Tv. But for $4k I could get a 61" 1080p DLP, a very respectable 5.1 system, and still have a few bones left.

    Here you go Kex

This would be a good place to start your quest. http://www.projectorcentral.com/1080p_shootout.htm

I'd get speakers. $4k would do just fine.

If you do not have speakers you want to keep, I would spend the vast majority of the budget on 3 to 5 quality speakers and a killer sub like the SVS PB12 Ultra/2. Quality over quanity, I always say! An inexpensive 720p projector would blow you away if you have never owned a large HD display before. Displays come and go but quality speakers last forever.

    Happy Holidays!
