DVI input for projectors - essential?!?

Alright, I really like the Mitsubishi XD300U

I can get it for $2695 with free shipping.

The only drawback is that there is NO DVI input. Is DVI essential for DLP projectors or will Component suffice?

I just saw my friends setup with a Sanyo PLV-1 with component and it looked very nice (110 inch screen on a gray wall) - watched LOTR:FOTR - the orc battle scene at Gimli's homeland area (VERY DARK) and very beautiful with ambient light. And the Mits I'm looking at has an even better light output.

I am a BIG fan of Mits., having owned an RPTV from them for 7 years without one issue.

DVI only bypasses the DA/AD conversion process. In my opinion if your equipment has the necessary DVI/HDMI connections on it I would go that route. But if your currently existing components only allow the connectivity of component cables that will suffice, unless of course you want to fork out extreme cash for a benefit which is marginal at best.

Obviously the major concern is your choice of component cables vs a standard DVI cable. I would also be concerned of your DVD players ability to send a good analogue signal down these component cables. A $200-$300 DVD player with DVI is supposed to be as good as $1000 DVD players using good insulated component cables.

Work with what you have in your setup right now and weigh up the pros and cons of each option.

If I were buying cables for myself, I would go for "canare".

The reason might not be to your liking but this is why -

1) Canare cables are not pushed in stores by salesman!

2) I believe more what is said about Canare cables than what I do about what is said about Monster cables. It is said that Canare outperform Monster in most cases.

3) Due to the high mark ups that stores get for Monster cable, are you really buying a $100 cable when 60% of it is markup. You must then be really buying a $40 cable right?

Canare are quite expensive, you can find alot of sellers on ebay willing to give your exact requirements because all Canare cables are hand crimped made. You will find in almost any Canare auction a very detailed summary of why they are better than Monster. In fact Canare promote the connectors more than the cable because usually any copper will do, all that Oxygen induced 5.439343% garbage found on monster is just nonsense.

If Canare is out of your league. Audioquest is a good brand.

That little lot should give you some alternative to Monster, but by all means go with Monster if thats what you want. I just don't believe in paying for hype.

It seems that in order to take use of the Faroudja DCDi system in the projector, you need a 15-Pin VGA connector.

What do you think?

Is there a place that sells high quality 3-pin RCA on one side and 15-Pin VGA on the other? inexpensively?

That ebay auction product might not work both ways that you posted. Some connectors only input at one end and output the other end.
