DVD Player as a 5.1 processor

Hey forgive me for a stupid question but.......

I am trying to put together a very cheap HT with some of my already budget gear. I have an old Sony reciever (STR-AV47) that is not a 5.1 reciever. I do have a DVD player that has a built in Dolby Digital/DTS processor. I also have a Sony sub with a 100 watt built in amp. The reciver does not have a separate sub out jack. Is there a way I can hook these up to 5 speakers in order to achieve surround sound?

Well...hooking it up to 5 speakers could be done, yes. But would it sound good? Probably not. Since your receiver is not 5.1, it will obviously not have speaker outputs for 6 discrete speakers and you can't hook speakers directly to your DVD player so you'll need something in between..such as a brand new A/V receiver! Time to upgrade!

    Thanks for the quick response!!!
Your answer confirmed my suspicions but I was hoping there was a slight chance.
An upgrade is in the distant future and I was looking for a quick fix for my little study.
My main A/V reciever is a Panasonic HE-70 that is fine but I would love to upgrade to one of the newer Pioneer's or Yamaha when some money comes available.
