    Displaysearch: 1080p is a winner

As many of us believe that 1080p is an amazing picture...don't count out 720p (768p), you can get some great prices!

yeah...720p is very dumb. why would people want such a low resolution display (1280*768) when one can get a 1080p display with a rez of 1920*1080...

    thats more that DOUBLE the pixels... (950 000 vs. 2 070 000)

and the price isn't that much more compared to the fact that in a few years, all 720p displays will be downgrading the signals. just spend the money and get a display that'll last into the next decade.

If you were to get a LCD for your grandpa, will it be Fulled Def'd?

Do you think the difference in Pic would be that obvious for a screem smaller than 50"?
Then again, I'm not into this videophilia...

lol I"M not buying the screen...and the only reason its 720p and not 1080p is because he'll probably only ever use it with basic analogue cable, so even the extra couple hundred dollars is pointless.

And yes, i know an HDTV is wasted on analogue cable...but my dad set his mind and isn't backing out... oh well.

I agree, except for the part about "degrading" the picture.
I have a 1366/768 set and its good enough for a computer monitor.
And a HD picture is largely wasted on a screen 30in or smaller.
I think 1080p is worth it but 720-768 will be going for fire sale prices, and if its all you
can swing its better than nothing, some might think the savings are worth the sacrifice
    in PQ.
My next set will be 1080p, but that is far in the future

720p is far from dumb if at the screen size and viewing distance you will be using you cannot resolve the difference between 720 and 1080. It basically comes down to why spend more when you won't notice the difference?

It all depends solely on screen size, viewing distance and the acuity of your own vision.

That is true, and maybe "scaling factor" should also be added to above mix. Since most HD programming are offered in the 1080i format by broadcasters, it scales better to 1080p than 720p.

Agreed on that though, scaling quality depends on the TV and if you've got a TV with 768 vertical resolution is has to scale everything.

    Which is my TV.
I think the reason for this resolution is to be able to use computer parts and save money
(basically its just a big computer monitor)
More important than 1080p is pixel for pixel display, not all 1080p sets can swing this.
Not to mention 24fps (72fps, each frame repeated 3 times) which eliminates 3:2 pulldown
