Dishnetwork HD 942 DVR/Receiver

I've had an HDTV for some time, but had issues with 3 separate Dishnetwork 811 receivers. I've waited for next generation units before venturing into it again. I like the utility and convenience of a DVR, so I'm interested in the 942, but I don't like the prices I'm seeing. It seems once you've suscribed to Dish, they pretty-much forget about giving any good deals. New customers get better deals and equipment than long-term subscribers. I'm looking for feedback on the 942 as well as any deals you've seen.

A ton of 942 info here. I absolutely love mine. What's not to like? Record 3 different HD programs while watching another.....all at the same time!

You can still be a "new" customer. Use a different name & phone number........"new" customer. Lease 942 for $250 (upfront) fee, or buy one for about $700. I did both (lease & own), so I have one in the HT, another in the bedroom on the 65" HD-Mitsubishi. They will only let you lease 1 (942) unit per account.

Well, you could go with cable if it's in your area. I didn't have Dishnet with HD but they're receiver functioned much smoother than the cable version. The cable DVR has little temporary and intermittent glitches. They're hard to explain, like split second pauses, sound drop outs, if I record a series sometimes a day won't record, this could be something with the cable feed as well. I switched because the cable company gave me a killer deal on programming if I did and locked in for 2 years. I have every movie channel and I don't know how many other channels, HD for one HBO, Showtime, Cinemax and local available HD channels for around $70.00. That includes my lease price for the cable DVR and the recording fee.

Sometimes if you call Dish and try to terminate service they will switch you to a customer service specialist who will cut you a deal to stay. I've had to do that a few times. Once my receiver got struck by lightning and they wouldn't help me so I told them Direct was offering free everything to get started and they can't help me to keep my business? They ended up giving me another receiver if I signed up for an extended warranty which was a couple bucks a month. The lightning snuck in through the phone line, so the deluxe power strips with phone in and out is worth it.

Some guy did me a major favor a few months ago when somehow I forgot to record a TV Show and he pointed me out to this web site www.mininova.org which seems to have almost every TV Show in the World on there, alot in HD, with the commercials edited out too & you can download any of them as bit torrant files. I use utorrant which is a free download ar www.utorrent.com with this The quality is great, so if you ever screw up you can use this as a backup. The downloads take a few hours though but don't interfere with the rest of your computer. I watch this stuff on windows media player. I'd delete the files though after your done as they are large.
