connection between my computer using a HDMI cable to an AV receiver.....

Using a new HDMI cable connection between the computer and AV receiver will only display the computer screen and no audio. If the connection from the earphone computer output jack is connected to the analog audio (red & white) inputs on the av receiver and selected as input, the computer screen does not display. Why is it that the HDMI does not input audio.
There has t/b a setting not configured correctly. The Av receiver is a Yamaha Rx-a840. Any kind thoughts to suggest to this newbie. thnx.

Disconnect the earphone jacks (1) modify the computer screen display to allow display on a projector / modify change the appearance of the display, (2) check your Hdmi cable, (3) verify/configuration of the hdmi input to the av receiver.
