bipole vs dipole -- what's the difference ?

I'm in the process of purchase of Boston surrounds model VR-MX.
I understand that these are bipole (bipolar) speakers. They have two woofers and two tweeters, facing in opposite directions.

The sound going out of the side of the speaker facing the front of the room is meant to be 'informative' (directional, like the information coming from the mains and center) while the sound produced by the woofer and tweeter facing the back of the room is 'reflective' and ambient type of information (meant to be non directional).

If my understanding is correct, what would a Dipole (or Dipolar) speaker be ? and how would it work and where would you use it ?


Are there two types of speakers known as Bipole and Dipole ?

Is there a difference between dipole and bipole speakers ?

What is that difference ?

Which is used in which application ?

Where might I find additional information on these types of speakers ?
