    We're inching closer to that SciFi staple of the video screen thin as a pane of glass. Samsung's upped the bar again with it's line of 1.2 inch deep LCD's

    Yep, this is the big trend for this year (along with developing "green" TVs). Panasonic has also come out with the new Z1 series HDTVs, which measure 0.8" thick.

    I've seen the new Samsung's and indeed they are crazy thin. LG is also due to come out with its own 1" thick HDTVs. I just wonder though how big a market there is for these TVs given that they are very expensive.

    I also wonder about their impact on performance. The Samsungs achieve this thinness by moving the LED backlighting to the edge rather than behind the panel. This eliminates the sequential LED dimming feature from last year's top-rated A950 series that boosted the motion resolution and contrast performance.
