Your Other System

We all have our main audio/video sytems. But many of us have other systems at home in our bedrooms, dens, etc. So what is your other system? Here are mine.

Kitchen: Sony Micro system with speakers from an older Pillips micro system

Spare bedroom/office: Sony boombox

Bedroom:
TEAC CD recorder
Sony STR-VX22 (from the 80s, soon to be replaced)
Denon DRM-555 cassette deck
Radio Shack (RCA) bookshelf speakers (soon to be replaced)

...which is great while I (try to) type on the computer. As soon as I do some sort of upgrade, the old component finds it's way into the bedroom.

I have a cheap Sony CDP (not bad sounding at all) >> Denon AVR-900 >> Paradigm Studio 60s. An old Realistic LAB-440/Grado Green is available on rare bedroom LP-spinning occassions, albeit boxed at this time. This table is at least decent sounding... a bit of a suprise to me. However, the CDP is used 99% of the time due to laziness.

I have the speakers set up so when lying in bed, I'm in the "sweet spot". Form follows function, I suppose.

Soon, I hope to get into a Conrad-Johnson integrated for my better rig, so the Rotel stuff will power the 60s at that time.

Overall, I'm happy with it...

BR Rig:
Receiver: Marantz 2230 - an oldie but a goodie
Speakers: Von Schweikert VR1's - as beautiful sonically as aesthetically and a dead ringer for our cherry armoire
Source: Toshiba dvd player - middling for music but will do for now.

Office: (aka my homage to jolly 'ol England. Their food sucks but damn, they know audio)
Int. Amp: Cambridge Audio Azur 540a - terrific bang for the buck
Source: Cambridge Audio Azure 540c - Wolfson dacs are very nice
Speakers: Mission 780a Argonauts - complete overkill in my office but hey, I was out of speakers!

Garage:
25 year old Panasonic boom box that only works if I hit it hard enough :)

I have an HT system in my living room consisting of:
Receiver/amplifiers: Yamaha RX-V1400, with 2 Adcom GFA 535 II amps purchased used for $50 bucks each :)
Speakers: 4 Paradigm Studio 20's (surrounds) Studio CC center, Studio 40's (mains) v.2, a PW-2200 sub, and a mediocre Panasonic DVD player.

Downstairs in my studio are some custom built floorstanders in a tweeter-mid-woofer design using Vifa drivers assembled by a local speaker builder friend of mine. Much nicer sounding than my Studio 40's, but if you aren't looking at the front black baffle straight on, the raw MDF finish is quite ugly...the plan was to buy some grey carpet to match all my music gear...
These are powered by Rotel RB-1080 (floor demo) and an older Rotel Ra-971 I bought at a pawn shop for $100 bucks a while back.
Oh, and mediocre Yamaha CD player that does the trick.

I also some older H/K, Pioneer, and Marantz integrateds/receivers/av receivers in boxes in my garage with some older Wharfedale speakers that survive cold winters.

Main:

Sometimes my dad likes to sing while taking a shower or cooking.

It's a Proton 300/301 combo fed by a Proton CDP. It's set up for nearfield listening, and makes me lose interest in my main system. I haven't even listened to my Stax earspeakers in a couple of years!

I like to fiddle about with old gear and have a definite leaning towards nostalgia.

Old Akai Reel to Reel recorders all feature in my "other room" systems (I think they were branded "Roberts" in the US). Hard to get new tape for them these days, but occasionally I find some in a shop where they are having a clean-out. My M10 still sounds wonderful, and then there are some old valve machines too that still work nicely - like my M7 and 1710L. I also sometimes haul out my Akai X-V which is a valve field recorder from the late 1960's. 5 inch reels, and stereo.

Small Technics micro system in my bedroom, and a Sony FH 414 in my office.

I like to rescue discarded equipment from the re-cycling centre and fix it (if I can) and give to people who don't have a system, or are missing a component.

Nothing wrong with that! I do a lot of nearfield listening too. I've been toying with the idea of getting a set of ProAc's to use as nearfield monitors for my computer.

...good nearfield monitors for your computer. I'm leaning toward using my headphones. I just won a Yamaha soundcard on eBay, so I'll see how that goes. Actually I don't spend that much time in the bedroom, listening - too much to do.

On my home computer, and I love em. I've also got a good soundcard, the Soundblaster Audigy. At work I've got a Yamaha card with softsynth tech. It's like having a mini sound studio right on your computer! I'm sure your going to like it.

Since I changed and upgraded my bedroom systen, I am listing it again:
